‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Crushed Another Box Office Record, and ‘The Odyssey’ Isn’t Far Behind

Hollywood has been on an absolute tear this summer, with two very different blockbusters trading records back and forth almost weekly. Between a web-slinging superhero reboot and an ambitious literary epic from one of cinema’s most acclaimed directors, this year’s late-summer box office has delivered exactly the kind of theatrical dominance the industry has been chasing for years.

That momentum shows no signs of slowing as we head deeper into August. Both films have spent the past several weekends setting new benchmarks, turning what could have been a quiet stretch of the calendar into one of the most competitive and lucrative box office runs in recent memory.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is once again leading the charge, banking a near $19 million Friday that puts its third weekend on pace for roughly $65 million domestically, a drop of 55 percent from the previous frame. That performance pushes the film’s running domestic cume to $780.8 million, keeping Sony and Marvel’s latest webslinging outing firmly in the conversation as one of the year’s biggest theatrical events.

The film has already made history well before this latest milestone. ‘Brand New Day’ recently crossed $700 million domestically in just 13 days, officially becoming the fastest movie ever to reach that benchmark, edging out both ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which had previously tied for the record at 16 days each. It’s currently sitting as the sixth highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office.

Right behind it, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ continues its own record-setting march through theaters. The film pulled in a $51 million third weekend, a drop of 43 percent, marking the best third-frame performance of Nolan’s career at the domestic box office. That result brings the film’s running domestic cume to $396.5 million, putting it firmly on track to sail past the half-billion mark.

Should ‘The Odyssey’ cross that half-billion threshold, it would become Nolan’s second-highest grossing film domestically, trailing only ‘The Dark Knight’, which finished its run at $534 million. That’s a remarkable milestone for a filmmaker whose body of work already includes some of the most commercially successful original blockbusters of the past two decades.

Both films are set to share IMAX and premium large-format screens once again this coming weekend, a competitive dynamic that’s helped fuel both releases rather than cannibalizing either one’s audience. Industry estimates place the upcoming domestic outlook for ‘The Odyssey’ between $18 million and $23 million, with a foreign estimate ranging from $20 million to $25 million across 74 territories.

Elsewhere in the marketplace, this weekend also welcomes a handful of new wide releases looking to carve out space alongside the two box office juggernauts. Paramount and Spin Master’s ‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie’ opens at 3,545 domestic theaters, while Angel Studios’ ‘The Brink of War’ debuts at 2,083 locations, both hoping to capture family and counter-programming audiences respectively.

Internationally, ‘Brand New Day’ has already surpassed $1 billion overseas, making it the second-fastest film ever to hit that mark abroad behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Combined with its domestic haul, the film’s worldwide total continues climbing toward the $2 billion threshold, a figure that would place it among an extremely exclusive group of films in box office history.

With both films continuing to defy typical post-opening drop-off patterns, this late-summer stretch has quickly become one of the strongest theatrical windows of the year. Between Spider-Man’s record-breaking pace and Nolan’s career-best returns, 2026 is shaping up to be a genuinely historic year at the movies.
