‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Dethroned ‘No Way Home’ and It’s Officially the Biggest Spider-Man Movie Ever

Superhero fatigue has been the industry’s favorite talking point for years now, with box office analysts constantly debating whether audiences were finally tired of caped crusaders and web-slingers dominating multiplexes. Every summer seemed to bring fresh predictions that the genre’s box office dominance was finally cooling off.

Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has spent the past two weeks systematically dismantling that entire narrative. Since debuting on July 31, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has moved through box office milestones at a pace that’s stunned even the most optimistic industry projections.

That record-shattering momentum reached a genuinely historic milestone this week, as the film officially surpassed ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at the global box office, becoming both the highest-grossing comic book movie of the decade and the biggest ‘Spider-Man’ film of all time. The film has now crossed $1.85 billion worldwide, edging past ‘No Way Home’s’ full lifetime haul.

The achievement carries an interesting wrinkle for longtime franchise watchers. ‘No Way Home’ had the benefit of enormous nostalgia-driven buzz surrounding the surprise returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, released during a pandemic-era window when audiences were especially hungry for any kind of major theatrical event.

‘Brand New Day‘ has needed no such nostalgic boost to reach these numbers. The film delivered the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history with $360 million, alongside the second-largest global debut ever recorded at $932 million, records that stood entirely on the strength of its own theatrical performance.

Its pace since then has been just as relentless. The film became the fastest movie ever to cross $700 million domestically, doing so in just 13 days, edging out both ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which had previously tied for that record at 16 days each.

Internationally, the film’s rise has been equally dramatic. Its overseas total climbed to $1.108 billion, edging past ‘No Way Home’s’ full foreign haul of $1.106 billion to become the biggest release in Sony’s history outside North America.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, ‘Brand New Day’ picks up four years after the events of ‘No Way Home’, following a Peter Parker forgotten by everyone he once loved after Doctor Strange’s memory-erasing spell. That fresh narrative slate appears to have resonated strongly with both critics and audiences, helping the film maintain strong word of mouth throughout its record-setting run.

With its current trajectory, industry watchers expect the film to cross the $2 billion threshold sometime during its third weekend in theaters, a milestone that would make it just the eighth movie in history to reach that mark and the first ‘Spider-Man’ film ever to do so. That would place it firmly among an extremely exclusive tier of the highest-grossing releases ever made.

Looking further down the road, some projections suggest the film could eventually challenge for a spot among the three biggest movies ever released, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’. Those two films have benefited from multiple theatrical re-releases over the years, a factor that’s worth keeping in mind when comparing their final totals to Brand New Day’s still-active run.

For a genre that’s spent the past few years fending off constant predictions of decline, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ historic performance stands as one of the clearest signals yet that audiences haven’t lost their appetite for superhero spectacle.
