Spider-Man: Brand New Day Just Revealed a Huge Clue That Shocker Is Making His MCU Return
A new image shared by Sony Korea is giving fans their first proper look at Spider-Man wielding a very familiar weapon in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘, and it might be the biggest villain tease in the film’s marketing so far.
The shot shows Tom Holland’s Spider-Man crouched amid rubble with a glowing, mechanical gauntlet strapped to his arm, a device longtime fans immediately recognized as Shocker’s signature weapon.
New footage has finally shown how Spider-Man plans to fight back against the Hulk, with a clear glimpse of the wall-crawler using what appears to be a modified Shocker gauntlet. The Shocker is an iconic Spider-Man villain, and the MCU version of the character was previously part of Vulture’s criminal gang in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’
Near the end of an earlier trailer, as Spider-Man was seen falling through the sky alongside the Hulk with a building crumbling behind them, eagle-eyed fans spotted the same electric gauntlet worn by Shocker in ‘Homecoming’ strapped to his arm. It would be an unusual choice for Spider-Man to be wearing that specific piece of tech unless Shocker himself has some role to play in the story.
The character has a complicated history in the MCU. Two different men have taken on the Shocker identity on screen, with Jackson Brice using the mantle first before he was killed by Vulture, and Herman Schultz picking it up afterward. The last time audiences saw Schultz’s Shocker, he had been webbed up by Spider-Man and left for the authorities to arrest, so Brand New Day would need to explain how he ends up free again or how his gauntlet resurfaces without him.
In the comics, Shocker is a self-taught engineering genius with no natural superpowers, relying instead on vibro-shock gauntlets capable of blasting through vaults, vehicles, and virtually anything in his path. If Marvel is bringing him back for this film, it would mark his first MCU appearance since 2017’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’
For months, there have been rumors that Shocker technology would resurface in Brand New Day, likely after being seized by Damage Control and released for reasons still unknown, and it now looks like this tech will give Spider-Man an edge in his fight against the Hulk given how badly outmatched he otherwise is. Some have theorized this could even be setting up a larger Sinister Six team assembling against Holland’s Spider-Man down the line, with Shocker joining Scorpion as a villain Peter has already tangled with more than once.
Do you think Shocker is returning in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'?
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and picks up four years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ with Peter Parker anonymously protecting New York after the world forgot he ever existed. The film swings into theaters on July 31, and if this gauntlet tease pays off, Shocker may end up being one of the film’s most unexpected returning faces.
