‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Officially Becomes the Highest-Grossing Spider-Man Movie Ever
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has broken records at a pace few blockbusters ever manage, and this weekend delivered one more milestone that feels especially personal. Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent its entire theatrical run rewriting box office history, one benchmark at a time.
Since debuting on July 31, the film has moved through milestones faster than almost anything else in recent memory, consistently outpacing even ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ historic 2019 run. What started as a record-setting opening weekend has now turned into a genuine race against the franchise’s own history.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ crossed $1.85 billion at the global box office, officially making it the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie of all time, surpassing 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and its $1.9 billion worldwide total along the way to claim the title.
That achievement comes with an interesting wrinkle, since ‘No Way Home’ had the benefit of enormous nostalgia-driven buzz surrounding the returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, alongside minimal competition during a pandemic-era release window still hungry for theatrical events. ‘Brand New Day’ has climbed to similar heights without that same multiverse-driven pull, relying instead on consistently massive daily numbers that have matched, and at times beaten, ‘Endgame’s’ historic pace.
The film’s international performance alone has been staggering, with its overseas total climbing to $1.108 billion, edging past ‘No Way Home’s’ full foreign haul of $1.106 billion to become Sony’s biggest release ever outside North America. Domestically, ‘Brand New Day’ has also become just the second Spider-Man film ever to cross $700 million, trailing only ‘No Way Home’ itself on that specific list.
Along the way, ‘Brand New Day’ picked up a long list of records that few films manage even one of. It became the fastest movie ever to cross $500 million domestically, the fastest to reach $700 million, and one of only a small handful of films to surpass $1 billion worldwide within a single week of release, a pace matched only by ‘Endgame.’
The film’s opening weekend alone reset multiple long-standing records, delivering the biggest domestic debut in box office history with $360 million and the second-largest global opening ever at $932 million. It also posted the highest-grossing Monday in history with $47 million, beating a mark previously held by 2018’s ‘Black Panther.’
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, reflecting on the film’s early box office run, credited the milestone to the character’s enduring appeal, noting how surprised he was to see Endgame’s domestic opening record fall to what he called the studio’s 38th MCU release. He expressed to Variety that he hadn’t expected ‘Endgame’s’ domestic record to be broken, but was thrilled it happened with this installment.
That kind of momentum has carried ‘Brand New Day’ through its entire run so far, with the film continuing to top box office charts even weeks after its debut. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, the film has managed to remain the highest-grossing release of the year while still holding strong reviews and enthusiastic word of mouth from audiences.
With the film now sitting atop its own franchise’s all-time earnings list, the bigger question becomes just how much further it can climb before its theatrical run winds down, and whether it has enough gas left in the tank to challenge some of the biggest names on the all-time global chart.
