The biggest theatrical hits eventually end up on a streaming service, and fans spend months guessing which one and when. For a film that broke box office records over the summer, the question carries extra weight. The answer, at least according to one widely shared report, is closer than many expected.

Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened exclusively in theaters on July 31 and quickly became a phenomenon. It debuted with a record $360 million domestically, edging past ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and posted a $932 million worldwide opening. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A CinemaScore.

Now the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Netflix release is the topic of the week. Box office tracker Global Box Office claimed on X that the film will stream on Netflix only in December, as part of the company’s deal with Sony, and said it is expected to become the most-streamed non-original film on the platform of all time. Neither Sony nor Netflix has confirmed a date.

Fans don’t have to wait to watch it at home. The film arrived on premium video on demand on Tuesday, October 6, and can be rented for $24.99 or bought for $29.99 on platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. A 4K Blu-ray Steelbook with variant cover art is set for December 15, along with standard Blu-ray and DVD.

A theatrical re-release with extended footage is also in the works, according to Deadline. Sony has been in no rush to move the film off premium screens, which makes sense for a movie that continues to draw crowds.

The picture on the Netflix date is less certain than the headline suggests. Sony and Netflix announced a multiyear agreement in January that makes Netflix the exclusive “Pay-1” streaming destination for Sony’s feature films after their theatrical and home entertainment releases. Pay-1 is the industry term for a film’s first subscription-streaming window.

Estimates vary on timing. What’s On Netflix data cited by Men’s Journal points to a Netflix debut on November 28, while Decider has suggested late 2026 or early 2027. After its Netflix run, the film is expected to move to Disney+ sometime next year.

The streaming arrangement is enormous. Sony and Netflix expanded their Pay-1 deal into a worldwide pact reportedly worth around $7 billion, according to Broadcast. It follows an earlier 2020 deal understood to be worth about $3 billion, and it is expected to reach full global availability on Netflix by early 2029.

Upcoming titles in the new arrangement include ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ and Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles release. Sony is the only major Hollywood studio without its own streaming service, which makes the licensing money especially important.

The tweet also points to another Sony-made Netflix smash. ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ was produced by Sony Pictures Animation under the same Pay-1 relationship, and it became Netflix’s most-watched film of all time. Netflix has since confirmed a sequel, with creators Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning.

The film was developed at Sony in 2021, when the company signed its Pay-1 output deal and theaters were still recovering from the pandemic. Sony reportedly made only about $20 million in profit from it, while most of the value flowed to Netflix. That history shows how much a streaming window can be worth.

The logic behind the record prediction is simple. A film this popular, finally available to subscribers on the world’s largest streaming service, could draw massive audiences. Netflix subscribers can watch at no extra cost, regardless of subscription tier, once it arrives.

Whether it surpasses other non-original titles is still an open question, and the prediction remains an expectation rather than data. Still, with the film’s box office momentum and the reach of Netflix, big numbers seem likely. Fans will be watching to see whether the date lands in November, December or beyond.
