Tom Holland Cracks a Joke About Spider-Man’s Near-Death Scene in New ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Featurette
Spoiler warning: few moments in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ hit as hard as the stretch where Peter Parker’s life hangs in the balance. Spider-Man’s near-death scene gave audiences one of the most emotional beats of Tom Holland’s run as the character. Now the film’s home release is showing what that moment looked like from behind the camera.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arrived on digital platforms on October 6, more than 2 months after its July 31 theatrical debut. It is a premium rental and purchase release rather than a subscription streaming debut. The 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions follow on December 15, and the package comes loaded with featurettes like ‘Tom Holland: The Evolving Spider,’ ‘Brand New Direction’ and ‘Peter and The Punisher.’
One of those behind-the-scenes features has already produced a viral moment. A short clip shared on October 6 shows Holland on set while shooting Spider-Man’s near death, and he laughs it off by saying it’s okay because he has already made 4 movies. The clip has drawn more than 435,000 views, and fans have been quick to rewatch the scene it comes from.

The scene follows the film’s climax, when Peter pulls Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) out of the path of a bullet at the Department of Damage Control on Roosevelt Island. The shot came from Frank Castle, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, who then carries a near-fatally wounded Peter to a hospital. Jean uses her powers to keep him alive until medical help arrives, and the city holds vigils while the Empire State Building lights up in red and blue.
Holland’s quip works because it nods to a real milestone. With this film, he became the first actor to play a live-action Spider-Man in 4 movies. For years, fans lamented the loss of Sam Raimi’s canceled ‘Spider-Man 4,’ so the joke carries extra weight in the context of the franchise’s history.
It also shows how Holland approaches the character. The featurette frames Peter’s arc in the film as a lesson about learning that he can’t do everything alone, which is exactly what the hospital sequence dramatizes. A little gallows humor on set makes sense when the scene is that heavy.
The digital release has also surfaced extra material from the same sequence. In one clip, Peter is shown having his mask removed in an operating theater, and he looks terrified. In the final cut, audiences don’t see him again until he is recovering in his hospital bed.
That moment has answered a question fans debated since the theatrical release: how Peter’s identity stayed secret in the hospital. The new footage suggests it didn’t, and that the people helping him simply kept his secret. Many viewers online are now hoping the scene appears in a rumored re-release of the film.

The timing of all this attention is no accident. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened to $360 million domestically and $932 million worldwide, setting a record for the biggest opening weekend in box office history. It has since grossed about $2.5 billion globally.
The film’s post-credits scene promises that Spider-Man will return, but Holland was not announced as part of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast. Some fan theories link his path to Doctor Doom and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ though nothing has been confirmed. For now, behind-the-scenes extras like this one are the closest fans will get to Holland’s next steps.

Even if Spider-Man’s future is uncertain, the response to this clip shows how much affection the audience has for Holland’s version of the hero.
