Marvin Jones III, best known for playing Tobias Whale in Black Lightning, is making the jump to the Marvel world.

According to Deadline, Jones has been cast as the villain Tombstone in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Neither Marvel nor Sony has commented yet on the news.

Jones is no stranger to the role. He already voiced Tombstone in Sony’s animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and will return for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Now he will step into live action to play the same character.

Tombstone, whose real name is Lonnie Lincoln, is a longtime enemy of Spider-Man. The character first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #36 back in 1988. In the comics, he is a large, pale-skinned man with a chilling look and a voice that rarely rises above a whisper. His backstory explains that he was born with albinism, which made him stand out in his neighborhood and left him isolated.

Over time, he turned to crime, working with gangs and mob bosses.

Lonnie’s past is also tied to Joe “Robbie” Robertson, a classmate who grew up to become a Daily Bugle editor. As a teenager, Robbie once considered exposing Lincoln’s crimes in the school paper but backed down after being threatened.

Years later, their paths crossed again, leading to one of the most dramatic storylines in The Spectacular Spider-Man. In that story, Tombstone brutally attacks Robbie after he tries to expose him, and Spider-Man steps in to take the villain down.

Jones now has the chance to bring this menacing character to life on screen. Filming for Spider-Man: Brand New Day started in August with scenes shot in Glasgow, Scotland, and additional work at Pinewood Studios in England.

The film is part of Marvel’s Phase Six and is set to release in U.S. theaters on July 31, 2026.
