‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 Trades Phasers for Cowboy Hats in Its Wild Premiere Clip

Star Trek has always found ways to reinvent itself within its own established formula, and the franchise’s most acclaimed current series has made experimentation something of a signature trait. Rather than sticking to predictable formulas, the show has consistently proven willing to take genuine creative swings episode to episode.

That reputation only grows stronger heading into its next chapter, as fans prepare for one of the show’s most unpredictable seasons yet. Rotten Tomatoes has shared an exclusive clip from the Season 4 premiere of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,’ with the all-new season set to arrive July 23 on Paramount Plus. The footage offers fans their earliest glimpse yet of the crew’s latest adventure, one that appears to swap the usual cosmic backdrop for something considerably more dusty and rugged.

That western-tinged premiere episode, reportedly titled Valles Marineris, sets its story on Mars with a distinctly frontier inspired visual style. It marks just one entry in a season the showrunners have described as returning to a classic episodic format, packed with standalone stories rather than tightly serialized arcs.

Season 4 continues the show’s established pattern of leaning into genre experimentation, with the season also promising episodes built around a black hole storyline and another that reportedly brings back Jim Henson’s Creature Shop for a full Muppet-style installment. That kind of tonal range has become one of the defining traits separating ‘Strange New Worlds’ from other entries in the franchise.

Anson Mount returns as Captain Christopher Pike, joined once again by Rebecca Romijn as Una, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush and Christina Chong reprising their respective roles. Paul Wesley is also confirmed to return as James T. Kirk, with the season’s second episode, titled Griffin Incident, expanding further on his ongoing arc within the series.

The new season runs for 10 episodes, releasing weekly through a September 24 finale. That structure keeps the show firmly in the traditional broadcast style rollout that has helped build sustained weekly conversation among fans since the series first premiered.

This upcoming season also carries some bittersweet weight for longtime viewers, marking the second-to-last chapter in the show’s overall run. Paramount has already confirmed a shortened fifth and final season, expected sometime in 2027, designed specifically to bridge directly into the events of the original ‘Star Trek’ series.

The timing of Season 4’s release lines up neatly with the franchise’s 60th anniversary celebrations this year, adding extra significance to this particular batch of episodes. Given how much creative risk the show has embraced throughout its run, from puppet transformations to genre-bending detours, fans have plenty of reason to expect another wildly ambitious season ahead.
