That is a notable departure for a franchise where every one of the 13 theatrical films has featured characters or actors connected to either ‘The Original Series’ or ‘The Next Generation.’

All-New Characters Signal a Franchise Reboot
Paramount Skydance officially announced the new Star Trek movie was in development at CinemaCon 2026, though at the time no plot or character details were shared. This film is widely believed to be the new take on Star Trek from ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, and it reportedly has no ties to any previous Star Trek movie or television series.

Instead, the documentary ‘Beam Me Up, Sulu’ has been acquired by Tribeca Films and is set for a digital release on February 17, 2026, focusing heavily on actor George Takei.
On the television side, ‘Strange New Worlds’ season 4 premiered on Paramount+ on July 23, and it is serving as the centerpiece of Paramount’s 60th anniversary celebration. New episodes are continuing to roll out through the summer, with episode 2 premiering July 30 and additional episodes following in August.
Paramount Skydance has also canceled its previous plans to produce more Star Trek movies made specifically for streaming on Paramount+, a decision that reinforces just how much weight is now being placed on this theatrical reboot to define what comes next for the franchise.
