At the premiere of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, television writer Leslye Headland shared her ideas for potential Star Wars films if approached by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. By April 2020, Headland was confirmed to write and serve as showrunner for a new female-centric Star Wars series on Disney+. The series was expected to be set in a different timeline from other Star Wars projects in the High Republic Era.

Lucasfilm officially announced the development of Headland’s series on May 4, 2020, Star Wars Day. At Disney’s Investor Day event on December 10, 2020, Kennedy revealed the series title as ‘The Acolyte,’ set at the end of the High Republic era. Rayne Roberts from Lucasfilm was co-developing the series with Headland, who drew inspiration from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. In February 2023, directors Alex Garcia Lopez and Kogonada were hired to helm episodes of the series. In March 2023, Lucasfilm faced a lawsuit from Karyn McCarthy over a breach of contract related to her work on the series. Despite the troubled development, it seems that the show will see the light of the day sooner rather than later.

Today first trailer for the show has been released, offering viewers a first look into the characters and the High Republic setting. The cast of the upcoming project includes Amandla Stenberg as Mae, a former padawan turned warrior; Lee Jung-Jae as Sol, a respected Jedi master; Manny Jacinto as Qimir, a former smuggler; Dafne Keen as Jecki Lon, a young Jedi; Jodie Turner-Smith as Mother Aniseya, leader of a coven of witches; Rebecca Henderson as Vernestra Rwoh, a Jedi Knight prodigy; Charlie Barnett as Yord Fandar, another Jedi; Carrie-Anne Moss as Indara, a Jedi Master; Joonas Suotamo as Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi master; and Amy Tsang. Dean-Charles Chapman and Margarita Levieva are also involved in the project.
