Stephen Fry (68) Speaks Out on His 30 Year Age Gap Relationship and Backlash
Stephen Fry is not holding back when it comes to defending his marriage. The actor and writer recently spoke about the criticism he and his husband, Elliott Spencer, sometimes face because of their 30-year age gap. His comments came during an appearance on the show The Assembly, which aired on April 8.
The interview stood out because of its format. The questions were asked by a panel made up of people who are neurodivergent or have learning disabilities. According to the show, the goal is to have open and honest conversations, and Fry did exactly that. He spoke about many parts of his life, including his mental health, past struggles, and his relationship.
At one point, the topic turned to his marriage. A member of the panel, who also has experience with an age-gap relationship, asked him how he deals with people judging his personal life. Fry did not hesitate to answer.
He made it clear that he does not take those opinions seriously. “I feel a bit sorry for them. I don’t see why they should have such an opinion about things,” he said during the episode. He explained that what matters most in any relationship is the connection between the two people involved.
For him, love and trust are the only things that count. “The only thing that should matter in a relationship is love, and if you feel it,” he shared. He also talked about how their relationship works on a day-to-day level, saying that Spencer plays a big role in making decisions.
“I mean, I always say to people that in our relationship, Elliot has all the power, really,” Fry said. “He makes a lot of the decisions about things because I trust him to. It just works for us, extremely well, and if people don’t like it, well, sod them.”
Fry and Spencer first met back in 2012 at a social event. Their relationship moved quickly, and they got married in early 2015. Even though they are a well-known couple, they usually keep their private life out of the spotlight. Still, Fry has shared in the past that Spencer has helped him stay connected to newer trends and culture.
The interview also included some lighter moments. The panel asked a few personal questions that caught Fry off guard. He laughed and chose not to go into too much detail but admitted he was surprised by how curious people were about his private life.
Outside of this interview, Fry has been busy with work. Reports say he is developing a new spy drama called The Interrogator for Fox. He is not only starring in the show but also writing and producing it. The project is being made with Lionsgate and is expected to be a major release for the network.
He also continues to work on audiobooks, where his voice has become very popular with listeners. Even with all these projects, he took the time to speak openly about his personal life and make his position clear.
