Stephen King Is Personally Hyping up a New Shudder Horror Movie, and Here’s Why ‘The Cycle’ Might Be Worth the Watch

Stephen King has spent decades as one of horror’s most trusted voices, and when he speaks up about a genre film outside his own catalog, fans tend to listen. The author has never been shy about championing work he genuinely admires, and his latest recommendation is already generating buzz well ahead of its actual release.

That endorsement centers on an upcoming Shudder original that’s been quietly building momentum since its announcement earlier this year. King took to social media to personally hype the film, a rare move for an author who’s typically more focused on promoting his own projects than boosting others in the genre.

“There’s a movie coming on Shudder in October called THE CYCLE. I don’t usually pump up horror movies (unless they are mine, haha), but this is special. Put it on your calendar,” King wrote. That kind of unprompted praise from one of horror’s most recognizable names is exactly the sort of endorsement independent genre films rarely get, and it’s already drawing fresh attention to the project.

‘The Cycle’ is set to debut exclusively on Shudder on October 23, directed by Jordan Downey, known for his work on ‘The Head Hunter’ and ‘V/H/S/Beyond.’ The film centers on a chilling premise, following the discovery of a man’s body after he’d been missing for thirty-six years, found at the scene of a horrific crime that forces his estranged daughter to unravel his dark, buried past.

Deborah Ann Woll stars in the lead role, bringing genre credibility from her work in the ‘Escape Room’ franchise alongside her broader career highlights, including playing Jessica Hamby in HBO’s ‘True Blood’ and Karen Page across Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ series. Jeffrey Donovan, best known for ‘Burn Notice,’ also stars in the film, rounding out a cast that further includes Gretchen Corbett, Jack Doolan, and Will Hochman.

Downey wrote the screenplay alongside Kevin Stewart, who previously collaborated with him on ‘The Head Hunter.’ James Harris of production company Tea Shop, which also produced ‘Obsession’ and ’47 Meters Down,’ expressed strong confidence in the project ahead of production, praising Downey’s originality as a filmmaker with the potential to become one of the genre’s next great voices.

‘The Cycle’ arrives as part of a particularly stacked October slate for Shudder, which has leaned heavily into original horror content as the platform continues building out its Halloween season programming. The film shares its October 23 release date with several other titles hitting the platform the same day, positioning it within a genuinely competitive month for horror releases across streaming.

Given King’s track record of championing genuinely distinctive genre work throughout his career, his public endorsement of ‘The Cycle’ carries real weight within the horror community. For a film that might otherwise have flown under the radar amid a crowded release calendar, that kind of high-profile validation could make all the difference in getting eyes on the project once it finally arrives.
