A new take on Stephen King’s Carrie is in production as an eight-episode series for Amazon Prime Video, led by director Mike Flanagan.

Known for adapting King’s Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, Flanagan is updating the 1974 novel for today’s audience. The story, first brought to the screen by Brian De Palma in 1976 and remade in 2002 and 2013, centers on Carrie White, a bullied teen with telekinetic powers.

Now Flanagan posted a new BTS photo of the set confirming that the show is in production:

Flanagan shared his vision in an interview, emphasizing the story’s relevance. “Why do it again? Carrie White is a story about high school violence and bullying, and that feels immediate and important today, unfortunately, even more kind of sharply relevant than I think it was when he wrote it,” he said.

He noted modern elements like social media, metal detectors in schools, and phones in locker rooms add fresh context. “Carrie White walking through a metal detector is interesting to me. Carrie White with social media. The iconic scene in the locker room is very different when people have phones in their hands,” he added.

To ensure the project honored King’s work, Flanagan sought the author’s approval. Though King initially questioned the need for another adaptation, he warmed to Flanagan’s modernized approach and gave his blessing. The series, announced in October 2024, began filming in Vancouver on June 16, 2025, with production set to wrap by October 17.

The cast includes Summer H. Howell in talks to play Carrie, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, and Matthew Lillard in an undisclosed role. Other actors confirmed in June 2025 include Samantha Sloyan, Alison Thornton, Amber Midthunder, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Heather Graham.

A writers’ room was formed last year to shape the updated narrative, which aims to tackle contemporary issues like bullying and school violence.

Flanagan’s track record with King’s stories gives me confidence that this Carrie series will be a compelling update. The focus on modern issues like social media and school safety feels timely and could make this version stand out. I’m excited to see how Howell portrays Carrie and how Flanagan handles the iconic horror moments.

But with so many adaptations already, I hope it feels fresh rather than repetitive. What do you think about this new Carrie series and its modern spin? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
