Steven Spielberg recently spoke about the value of live entertainment during a keynote conversation at the South by Southwest. While talking about the future of movie theaters, the director also touched on other forms of live art and why he believes they still matter.

During the discussion, Spielberg talked about the feeling people get when they gather together to watch something in person. He said that sitting in a dark theater with strangers and sharing the same story is a special experience that should not disappear.

His comments were widely seen as a response to remarks made earlier this year by Timothee Chalamet. In a joint town hall with Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet joked that he would not want to work in ballet or opera because, in his view, audiences do not care about those art forms anymore.

Spielberg appeared to disagree with that idea. While speaking at the festival, he pointed out that the same shared energy found in movie theaters can also be found in other live performances. He mentioned concerts, ballet, and opera as examples of experiences that bring people together.

The director smiled as the audience reacted with applause and laughter. He then made his point clear. “And we want that to be sustained,” he said. “We want that to go forever.” The moment quickly gained attention online because Chalamet’s earlier comments had already created debate in the arts community.

Several well-known performers spoke out after his remarks spread on social media. Among them were ballet star Misty Copeland and opera singer Andrea Bocelli, both of whom defended the long history and cultural importance of those art forms.

Some people have suggested that Chalamet’s comment may have been meant as a casual observation about audience trends rather than a serious criticism. Even so, the strong response from figures like Spielberg shows that the future of traditional performance arts is still a topic many people feel strongly about.

Despite the controversy, Chalamet is currently enjoying one of the biggest years of his career. He recently received praise for his performance in the film Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie.

His role as table tennis champion Marty Mauser has placed him among the contenders during this year’s awards season, including a nomination at the Academy Awards. The actor also has another major project on the horizon.

He is expected to return as Paul Atreides in Dune Part Three. The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve and will once again feature stars such as Zendaya and Florence Pugh. The next chapter of the series is currently planned for a theatrical release in September.
