David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult never expected a Supergirl collectible cup to become one of the strangest talking points ahead of the DC movie’s release. The two actors, who star together in Superman, recently reacted to the viral theater merchandise after fans online noticed an unusual detail in the design.

The cup was created as part of AMC’s promotional campaign for Supergirl, which is bringing more themed collectibles to theaters as the film gets closer to release. While promotional items have become a major part of blockbuster marketing, this particular design quickly gained attention for an unexpected reason.

The collectible cup was meant to represent Kara Zor-El’s famous superhero outfit. It features Supergirl’s blue suit along with her signature tan jacket. However, many fans online pointed out that the color and shape of the jacket created an unintended visual joke, causing the item to spread across social media.

The reaction was so big that even Corenswet and Hoult were asked about it. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Superman stars shared their honest thoughts about the unusual merchandise.

When asked about the cup, Corenswet immediately admitted he was not impressed, saying, “I don’t like that one bit.”

Hoult, however, had a very different reaction and jokingly replied, “I need a lot of those.”

The two actors continued discussing the design, with Corenswet admitting he did not fully understand why the cup looked the way it did. “I don’t understand, and I don’t think I want it explained,” he said.

Hoult then started to make another joke before Corenswet quickly stopped him, leading to a funny exchange that showed the actors also noticed the same thing fans had been talking about online.

The moment quickly became another example of how movie merchandise can sometimes create unexpected internet moments. In recent years, collectible popcorn buckets, cups, and toys have become a major part of blockbuster releases, often creating as much discussion as trailers and posters.

For DC Studios, the Supergirl promotion comes at an important time as the studio continues building its new cinematic universe. The movie stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and follows the character after her introduction in last year’s Superman.

Corenswet and Hoult are also part of the new DC Universe, playing Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman. The pair are expected to return for the upcoming sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is currently planned for 2027.

Meanwhile, Supergirl will introduce Alcock as the main hero of the next major DC Studios release. Directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the movie is based on the comic story Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and takes Kara on a much different adventure from her famous cousin.

The film is scheduled to arrive in North American theaters and IMAX on June 26 with international screenings beginning earlier on June 24.

While the Supergirl cup may not have been the marketing moment AMC or DC Studios expected, it has certainly created plenty of attention. For fans, the accidental design joke has become one of the most memorable parts of the movie’s promotional campaign before the film even reaches theaters.
