Few physiques in movie history are as instantly recognizable as the one Sylvester Stallone built for ‘Rocky.’ For nearly five decades, that sculpted frame became shorthand for grit, discipline, and the kind of underdog determination that made the character a cultural touchstone.

Now, at 80 years old, Stallone is looking back on that transformation with a far more complicated perspective than the one fans grew up admiring on screen. In a new interview, he opened up about just how far he pushed his body to maintain the look audiences came to expect from him.

Speaking with The New York Times, Stallone revealed that his relationship with his physique spiraled into bulimia during the making of ‘Rocky III.’ He described reaching an extremely low body fat percentage at the time and said he reached a point where he genuinely could not keep food down, whether his body was rejecting it or he simply didn’t want to hold onto it out of fear of losing his conditioning.

He characterized the mindset behind it as an obsessive, almost worship-like fixation on staying at that exact level of leanness, something he now recognizes as having crossed into unhealthy territory rather than simple dedication.

Stallone also acknowledged that steroids played a role in achieving the extreme physiques he built for both ‘Rocky’ and ‘Rambo,’ suggesting that no one reaches that kind of muscular definition through training and diet alone. He was blunt that maintaining that look for months at a time simply isn’t realistic without additional help.

The actor traced the evolution of his physical approach across the two franchises, explaining that he initially viewed his body as a kind of armor. Rocky Balboa started out as a relatively ordinary-looking character, he said, before vanity crept in and the look became more deliberate, and by the time he was playing John Rambo, he wanted something more animalistic and predatory, comparing the design to a jaguar rather than a bulkier, Schwarzenegger-style build.

Beyond the physical toll, Stallone connected his willingness to endure that kind of punishment to a difficult childhood, describing his father as physically abusive and saying he grew up determined to prove he couldn’t be broken. That mentality, he suggested, followed him directly into his approach to acting and his own body for decades afterward.

Not every role reinforced that same obsession, however. Stallone pointed to 1997’s ‘Cop Land’ as a turning point, a film for which he deliberately gained weight to play a physically diminished small-town sheriff, stepping deliberately away from the chiseled action-hero image that had defined him up to that point.

Looking back now, Stallone said he no longer views his body the way he once did, describing the years of extreme physical maintenance as coming at what he called a terrible price. He suggested that if he could revisit those choices, he might have handed off more of the physical stunt work to someone else rather than insisting on doing it all himself.

The timing of Stallone’s candor lines up with the release of his memoir, ‘The Steps,’ which digs further into the persistence, and evidently the personal cost, behind his decades-long career. It’s a notably vulnerable admission from an actor whose entire public image was built on projecting invincibility, and it adds a sobering layer to the mythology surrounding some of the most famous transformations in Hollywood history.

For an industry that still leans heavily on extreme physical transformations to sell action franchises, Stallone’s reflection serves as a reminder of what often goes unspoken behind those results. It’s a conversation that feels especially relevant given how openly Hollywood has started discussing the pressures actors face to maintain unrealistic standards.
