Gladiator (Franchise)
*Gladiator* (2000) is an epic historical action film directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general who is betrayed after the emperor’s son Commodus kills his father and takes power. Maximus is enslaved, becomes a gladiator, and fights his way through the arena while seeking revenge for the murder of his family and the emperor. The film was based on a story by David Franzoni and adapted into a screenplay by Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, with inspiration from the novel *Those About to Die*.
The film went through production challenges, including multiple script rewrites and the death of actor Oliver Reed during filming, but still became a major critical and commercial success. It grossed about $466 million worldwide and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe. A sequel, *Gladiator II*, was released in 2024, continuing the story world decades later.
