Netflix’s ‘The New Stanford Prison Experiment’ is an unscripted series premiering October 21 with six 45-minute episodes, placing 30 willing participants inside a real prison and randomly assigning them as guards or prisoners. Inspired by Philip Zimbardo’s controversial 1971 Stanford study, the show examines whether ordinary people inevitably conform to positions of power and control, or whether empathy and individuality can resist those pressures.
