‘Terminator 2’ Cast Reunites 35 Years After the Film Redefined Blockbuster Filmmaking

Few franchises have aged as gracefully in fan affection as James Cameron’s “Terminator” saga, and even fewer sequels have managed to overshadow their predecessor quite like “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” did back in 1991. More than three decades later, the film’s legacy continues to draw its stars back together in increasingly frequent reunions.

That legacy was on full display again this month as several members of the iconic cast came together once more, this time overseas. The reunion continues a pattern that’s picked up steam over the past year, with cast members crossing paths at fan conventions on both sides of the Atlantic as the film approaches its 35th anniversary.

Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick, who played John Connor and the shapeshifting T-1000 respectively, reunited in London while both attending the For the Love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy convention at Excel London. Patrick shared a photo of the pair together, captioning it, “Found John Connor in London. Turns out the T-1000 just needed a plane ticket.”

The London meetup follows an earlier reunion in December, when Furlong, Patrick, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn all appeared together at Steel City Con near Pittsburgh, marking one of the more complete “Terminator” cast gatherings in recent memory. That event brought together stars from both the original 1984 film and its 1991 sequel, giving fans a rare chance to see multiple generations of the franchise’s cast under one roof.

“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” remains widely regarded as the high point of the entire franchise, earning more than 520 million dollars worldwide and winning four Academy Awards upon its release. The film also marked Furlong’s acting debut, with the then-thirteen-year-old discovered at a Boys & Girls Club in Pasadena before being cast by Cameron in one of the era’s biggest productions.

That film remains the only “Terminator” installment to feature both Furlong and Patrick together on screen, a distinction that’s made their periodic reunions especially meaningful for longtime fans. While Furlong’s likeness was later used as a digital reference in 2019’s “Terminator: Dark Fate,” the role of John Connor has since been played by several other actors across the franchise’s various sequels and spin-offs, including Nick Stahl, Christian Bale and Jason Clarke.

Patrick, meanwhile, has continued working steadily across television and film in the decades since his breakout role, occasionally revisiting the T-1000 character in smaller cameo appearances, including nods in “Wayne’s World 2” and “Last Action Hero.” Off-screen, both actors have taken notably different paths since their time on “Judgment Day,” but their convention appearances together have consistently drawn enthusiastic reactions from fans eager to see the on-screen rivals reunited in real life.

Despite the continued fan enthusiasm surrounding cast reunions, the “Terminator” franchise itself remains in a state of limbo on the film side. Plans for sequels following 2019’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” were shelved after that film underperformed commercially, leaving the series without an active path forward for new theatrical installments.

That uncertainty has only heightened the significance of these recurring cast reunions, which have increasingly become one of the primary ways fans can engage with the franchise’s legacy in the absence of new film content. With Furlong, Patrick, Hamilton and other cast members remaining active on the convention circuit, these gatherings have effectively kept the spirit of “Judgment Day” alive even as its cinematic future stays uncertain.

For a film that redefined what blockbuster filmmaking could look like in the early 1990s, watching its cast continue reconnecting decades later offers a fitting tribute to just how enduring its impact on pop culture has remained.
