That “Dragon” Baffling UK Locals Is Actually a Genius ‘House of the Dragon’ Marketing Stunt
Viral videos of mysterious creatures in the sky have a way of taking over social media within hours, and this week’s flying dragon sighting over the UK was no exception. Clips of a large winged silhouette soaring against the sunset quickly spread across platforms, leaving plenty of confused viewers wondering exactly what they were looking at.
That confusion did not last long once the full context started coming out. Rather than some unexplained phenomenon, the footage traced back to one of the most elaborate promotional stunts of the summer, timed perfectly to coincide with a major real world event happening in the same city.
Locals were left baffled after a giant dragon was spotted flying over the UK city of Glasgow, but the mystery has since been solved. The animatronic creature is Syrax, the dragon from Game of Thrones prequel ‘House of the Dragon,’ flown over the OVO Hydro Arena and SEC Armadillo to promote the show’s third season while also celebrating the launch of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which began in Glasgow on July 23.
This is not the first time the flying dragon has taken to the skies to promote the show either. The same model previously soared 400 feet above the Tower of London back in June, marking what organizers described as the largest object ever to fly over the historic landmark.
Built by German aeronautics firm Airstage, the model boasts an impressive 25 foot wingspan and weighs 13 kilograms, constructed from vacuum-formed Depron foam wrapped around a carbon fibre and aluminum skeleton before being finished with hand airbrushed paintwork. The London flight alone reportedly took a 14-strong team three months and nearly 3,000 hours to build.
The engineering behind the stunt goes well beyond just a striking visual. The model features 23 moving mechanical parts to create lifelike movement, along with 13 impellers built into its legs to keep it aloft, allowing it to genuinely mimic the flight patterns audiences have come to expect from the show’s dragons.
Airstage’s chief operating officer described the London flight as one of the most intricate flying models the team has ever created, noting the crew underwent over seven test flights to refine the dragon’s movement until it closely matched what viewers see on screen. That level of detail clearly translated well, given how many people mistook the footage for something genuinely unexplained.

The London flight also came with its own celebration on the ground, with a special evening reception hosted following the display and attended by ‘House of the Dragon’ cast members including Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Clinton Liberty and Abubakar Salim. That kind of coordinated promotional push suggests HBO Max has been leaning heavily into unconventional marketing ahead of the show’s third season.
With the Commonwealth Games now officially underway in Glasgow and ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 continuing to build buzz through stunts like this one, it seems clear the dragon sightings baffling social media users were no accident. Given how effectively the footage spread online without any context attached, this kind of guerrilla marketing has clearly paid off for the show.
