Angelina Jolie once spoke about her experience working with Denzel Washington on the 1999 crime thriller The Bone Collector, and her comments about their on-screen chemistry gained a lot of attention later on.

In The Bone Collector, Jolie plays Amelia Donaghy, a young police officer who becomes involved in a serial killer investigation. The killer leaves behind disturbing clues at each crime scene, including bones taken from victims. Denzel Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme, a brilliant forensic expert who is left quadriplegic after an accident but continues to solve cases from his bed using his sharp mind and analysis.

The story follows their partnership as they work together to track the killer. Even though they are physically apart for much of the investigation, their connection grows through constant communication, shared problem solving, and emotional tension. That bond eventually includes a romantic angle, though much of it is built on mental connection rather than physical interaction.

Jolie later spoke about one of the more intimate aspects of her character’s relationship with Washington’s character. She described it in a very specific way during her interview with Dark Horizons. She said, “What’s fascinating are the journeys these two characters undertake, and the deep relationship that evolves between them.”

She also commented on a scene where her character uses intelligence and sensory detail to create a strong emotional and romantic connection. She said, “It was the best sex I ever had.” She explained that she meant it in terms of emotional and mental connection rather than physical action, adding, “It was great seducing someone with your mind, a huge turn-on.”

At the time of release, Jolie also spoke honestly about how difficult filming The Bone Collector was for her. She said she struggled with confidence while carrying a major role in a serious thriller. She described feeling overwhelmed during production and unsure of her ability to handle the pressure of leading a film of that scale. She said, “I went a bit nuts. From the beginning, I felt as if I was not capable of doing this, of leading a film and being responsible for this, of physically handling this, of saving a life and going in there and being a cop.”

She also reflected on how intense the experience felt, especially because her character was constantly exposed to disturbing material related to murder investigations. Jolie later joked that the role felt mentally draining and emotionally heavy, saying the character’s mindset affected her during filming.

When The Bone Collector was released, it received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics. Many reviewers praised the performances of both Washington and Jolie. Washington was often highlighted for bringing depth and intelligence to a character who is physically limited but mentally strong. Jolie was also praised for standing out in a major early role, helping to raise her profile in Hollywood.

However, some critics felt the film relied too much on familiar thriller formulas. They pointed out that while the premise was interesting, the pacing sometimes slowed down and the story followed predictable crime-thriller patterns. Even with those criticisms, the film performed well enough at the box office and has remained known for the unusual pairing of its two leads.

Over time, The Bone Collector has gained more recognition as an early example of Jolie’s rise as a major film star and another strong performance in Denzel Washington’s career.
