‘The Batman Part II’ Just Had Its Working Title Officially Confirmed, and Fans Think It’s a Major Villain Tease

Between shifting release dates and a steady trickle of casting reveals, ‘The Batman’ sequel has become one of the most closely tracked productions in the superhero genre.

Every scrap of information that’s leaked out has been picked apart by fans hoping to piece together where the story goes next. Even small production details, the kind that would normally slip by unnoticed, have taken on outsized importance for a fanbase desperate for any hint about the film’s direction.

That’s exactly what’s happening now, as ‘The Batman Part II’ has had its working title fully confirmed to be Semper Vigilans, a Latin phrase meaning “always vigilant.” The reveal has reignited speculation about who Bruce Wayne might be squaring off against in his next outing.

For longtime readers of the source material, Semper Vigilans isn’t just a stylish placeholder title. The phrase has long been associated with the Court of Owls, the secretive criminal organization introduced by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo in 2012’s Batman #6, made up of some of Gotham’s wealthiest and most influential citizens who order assassinations carried out by highly trained agents known as Talons.

The connection becomes even clearer when paired with the eerie nursery rhyme that appears throughout the comics, warning readers to “beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time, ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch.” That constant watching, always vigilant, ever watchful framing lines up almost perfectly with the working title now attached to the sequel.

Despite the speculation, Warner Bros. has kept the actual plot details of ‘The Batman Part II’ tightly under wraps. What is confirmed is the returning cast, led by Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Bruce Wayne, alongside Jeffrey Wright as Lieutenant Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell returning as Oz Cobb, better known as Penguin.

Jayme Lawson is also set to return as Mayor Bella Reál, while Charles Dance has joined the cast in a role that has yet to be detailed. Director Matt Reeves has remained committed to keeping his version of Gotham isolated from the wider DC Universe, positioning the franchise under the label of DC Elseworlds rather than folding it into James Gunn’s larger interconnected slate.
