‘The Boys’ Star Karl Urban Just Shut Down Wolverine Fan-Casting, and His Reason Is All About Hugh Jackman

Karl Urban has spent years attracting Wolverine fan-casting, largely because his screen presence has made him an obvious choice whenever fans imagine who could eventually take over Marvel’s claws. His performances in projects such as ‘The Boys’ and his previous work inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe have only kept that conversation alive.

The idea has never been difficult for fans to picture. Urban has repeatedly played intense, physically imposing characters, and his portrayal of Billy Butcher in ‘The Boys’ has often encouraged comparisons to Wolverine’s gruff personality and violent streak. The fancasting became so persistent that Urban was directly asked about it during a 2022 interview with The Guardian.

Urban’s response at the time was already enough to cool expectations. He acknowledged that the fan art was flattering but pointed out the practical problem of his age, explaining that a studio looking for someone to play Wolverine across multiple movies would likely want an actor who could commit to a longer run.

Now, however, Urban appears to have offered an even more personal reason for why he would not want the role. The actor says he would refuse the opportunity out of respect for Hugh Jackman, making it clear that he would rather see Jackman continue playing Wolverine than attempt to step into the role himself.

That sentiment carries particular weight because Jackman’s connection to Wolverine is unusually deep. He first played Logan in ‘X-Men’ and ultimately became so synonymous with the character that even the possibility of replacing him has remained a sensitive subject among fans.

Jackman’s supposed farewell in ‘Logan’ seemed to close that chapter, but Marvel eventually found a way to bring him back. In a 2024 interview, director Shawn Levy explained that Jackman had previously been at peace with leaving Wolverine behind before calling him and Ryan Reynolds during the development of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to say he wanted to return.

Jackman himself described the decision as something that arrived suddenly, saying during a Rotten Tomatoes interview that he experienced a strong feeling that he wanted to make the movie with Reynolds and bring Deadpool and Wolverine together. The interview was conducted ahead of the film’s release and offered a firsthand explanation for why Jackman reversed course after previously treating ‘Logan’ as his final appearance.

That return also demonstrated why replacing Jackman is such a complicated proposition. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was built around the history of his version of the character, while the filmmakers deliberately used the multiverse to bring Wolverine back without undoing the ending of ‘Logan.’

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick later explained that the existence of alternate versions of characters gave them a way to bring Wolverine into the story without simply reversing what happened in the earlier film.

Urban also has an unusual connection to Marvel that makes the fancasting especially interesting. He already appeared in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ as Skurge, an Asgardian warrior who ultimately sacrifices himself, meaning a straightforward MCU recasting would create another complication for Marvel. Urban previously discussed the role with ComicBook.com and said he had enjoyed the experience of working with director Taika Waititi and the cast.

Still, the possibility of Urban as Wolverine has refused to disappear. Fan-made images have circulated for years, with his rugged appearance and performances in action-heavy roles making him one of the recurring names in Wolverine fancasting discussions. Even Urban’s earlier comments did little to end the speculation completely.

For now, Urban’s latest stance suggests that fans should probably stop expecting him to chase the claws, especially if his admiration for Jackman’s portrayal remains as strong as it appears to be. Rather than competing with an iconic performance, Urban seems content to let Jackman’s Wolverine remain exactly where he believes the character belongs.
