‘The Cycle’ Becomes Halloween’s Horror Sleeper Hit With a Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Every spooky season seems to produce at least one genre surprise, a film that arrives without much fanfare and quietly takes over the conversation. This year, that honor appears to belong to ‘The Cycle‘, a slow-burn horror thriller that landed on Shudder just in time for Halloween. It has been steadily building a reputation as one of the most acclaimed scary movies of the year.
The buzz began long before the streaming debut. The film had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin in September, and the first reviews appeared on September 19. It also played Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on September 24, and its festival run initially earned it a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes before more critics weighed in.
Now the numbers have settled, and they are still remarkable. ‘The Cycle’ is Fresh at 95% on the Tomatometer from 38 reviews, an impressive showing for a modestly scaled genre release. It also makes the film one of the best-reviewed horror titles of 2026 so far.

Directed by Jordan Downey, who co-wrote the script with Kevin Stewart, the film stars Deborah Ann Woll as Meg, a forensic anthropologist who regularly helps police and the FBI. Police are investigating a brutal double murder in a quiet coastal home when they find a third body, an elderly man who has been dead for weeks. He turns out to be Meg’s father, who vanished 36 years ago, and his condition defies explanation.
Jeffrey Donovan and Will Hochman play a father-and-son cop duo who pull Meg into the case. The cast also includes Jack Doolan, Carl W. Crudup, Jeb Berrier, Gretchen Corbett and David Myers Gregory. Woll, best known for ‘True Blood’ and ‘Daredevil’, carries the emotional weight of a story about a daughter confronting her father’s dark past.
Critics describe a film in two halves. The first is a slow, methodical police procedural built around the cold case, while the second turns into a gory creature feature made with practical effects. That shift is the part reviews have praised most, along with the way the film saves its biggest reveal for the back half.
The praise has been consistent. RogerEbert.com said the film is not the first to turn a family drama into a monster movie but feels fresh due to the commitment of its creators. Others have highlighted the surprising emotional core, with one calling Downey a horror director of rare compassion.
Some reviewers focused on the visceral side, noting the gore and the gross-out scenes, including a maggot-heavy sequence. Nick Soole’s score has also been singled out as one of the best genre scores of the year. Critics were also surprised by the film’s tone, since Downey is the filmmaker behind the silly 2008 horror comedy ‘ThanksKilling’.
The film also has a famous fan. Stephen King praised it as one of the best horror movies of the year, comparing it to a mix of ‘The Thing’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’. That endorsement appears in the official trailer and helped drive attention ahead of release.
It seems to have worked. Reports say ‘The Cycle’ shot to the top of the streaming charts as the most-watched movie in the US within days of release, a strong result for a Shudder original. That makes it one of the season’s clearest sleeper hits.

At its previous score of 94%, the film had been the highest-rated horror title of the year according to one comparison, ahead of ‘Obsession’ at 93%, ‘Send Help’ at 92% and ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ at 91%. The caveat is that those films have far more reviews thanks to larger profiles. Even so, the Tomatometer places it in good company.
Audience reactions have been more mixed. Some viewers call it a refreshing addition to the genre, while others say it is good but not especially scary or that the ending could have been better. That split is common for slow-burn horror, and it hasn’t slowed the film’s momentum.
With a runtime of 111 minutes and a home on Shudder, ‘The Cycle’ is perfectly timed for Halloween viewing. A disc release is reportedly expected in December. For horror fans looking for something fresh, it may be the best surprise of the season.
