The DCU Batman Has No Suit Yet, and James Gunn Just Admitted It
Few filmmakers spend as much time answering fan questions as James Gunn, and few fan bases ask as many. With a shared universe still taking shape, every offhand reply from the DC Studios co-chief becomes a mini-announcement. The latest round of DCU canon answers is no exception.
The new DC Universe has been steadily expanding since ‘Superman’ launched it on the big screen, with the animated ‘Creature Commandos’ and the second season of ‘Peacemaker’ adding to it on HBO Max. ‘Supergirl’ arrived in June, and ‘Clayface’ hits theaters this week as the last DC movie until ‘Man of Tomorrow’ next July. Fans are hungry for any detail about what comes next.
On Monday night, Gunn answered a batch of questions on Threads, and one fan opened with 3 questions before cramming in 5. Gunn joked that it was 5 questions but why not, and then answered them all. Here’s what he revealed.
The first question asked whether the DCU Batman suit will have the same texture as David Corenswet’s Superman suit. Gunn’s answer was simple: the suit hasn’t been designed yet. It’s a notable admission about ‘The Brave and the Bold’, the film that will introduce the DCU’s Dark Knight.
Gunn described the film back in 2023 as the story of Batman and his son Damian Wayne, and the beginning of the Bat-Family in the DCU. Andy Muschietti is attached to direct from a script by Christina Hodson, and there’s still no release date. Casting is unlikely to begin until a screenplay is turned in, so the missing suit lines up with an early-stage project.

Asked whether Wally West is currently active in the DCU, Gunn’s reply amounted to a shrug. Who knows? It’s a tantalizing non-answer for fans hoping the speedster appears soon, and it suggests the studio hasn’t locked down where The Flash fits.
The next question assumed the 2023 movie ‘Blue Beetle’ is canon and asked whether Ted Kord was friends with Jaime Reyes before he disappeared. Gunn corrected the premise. Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes is canon, he said, but the studio hasn’t said the movie is.
That tracks with what Gunn has said before. In 2023, he confirmed Maridueña would continue playing the character in the DCU, alongside Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and John Cena as Peacemaker. Reports have also suggested DC Studios is developing an animated ‘Blue Beetle’ sequel series for HBO Max that could explore the post-credits revelation that Ted Kord is still alive.
The fourth question asked whether Gunn would write and direct the ‘Teen Titans’ movie, with the fan saying they could see him doing it. The answer was a flat no. That leaves the live-action project’s creative team wide open, and it means Gunn is keeping his focus on other pieces of the slate.
The final question was whether ‘Black Adam’, the Justice Society and the ‘Shazam!’ movies are canon. Gunn’s answer was another no, closing the book on that era of DC films. It’s consistent with what he told Den of Geek in 2025, when he made clear that ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ aren’t part of the DCU.
The confusion stems from cameos by Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland, who play their ‘Peacemaker’ characters in both films. Gunn has said that nothing is canon before ‘Creature Commandos’, though earlier events can be treated as vague memories. He has described himself as a balanced canon guy, preferring flexibility over strict rules.
For a universe built on interconnected stories, canon answers aren’t trivia. They tell viewers which films they need to watch and which can be skipped. Gunn has clearly decided that clarity is worth more than keeping everyone happy.
The replies also hint at how deliberate the DCU’s rollout is. A Batman suit that doesn’t exist, a Flash whose status is unclear and a Blue Beetle caught between eras all suggest a studio that is still mapping out its next chapter. That’s frustrating for impatient fans, but it also leaves room for surprises.
As ‘Clayface’ arrives and the next wave of projects takes shape, expect more rounds of fan questions and more one-word answers. If the pattern holds, each of them will spark a fresh wave of speculation.
