Sequel fatigue has become such a common talking point in Hollywood that when a follow-up decades in the making actually delivers, it tends to catch even the most seasoned industry watchers off guard. Twenty years is an especially long gap to bridge, and few franchises have managed to pull off that kind of nostalgic revival with both critical and commercial success intact.

That’s exactly what’s happened with one of this year’s most anticipated legacy sequels, which has continued building momentum long after its theatrical run wrapped. What started as a strong box office showing back in May has now translated into something even more impressive on the streaming side.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2‘ has achieved the biggest live-action movie premiere on Disney+ and Hulu since ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ racking up 15.2 million global views in its first five days of streaming availability, according to Deadline. The milestone arrives after the film had already grossed over $690 million during its theatrical run.

Disney calculated that viewership figure by dividing the total amount of time subscribers spent streaming the film by its 119-minute runtime, a methodology the studio has used consistently for its previous streaming benchmarks. That places ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ just behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which reached 19.4 million views over its first six days back in November 2024, though the comparison isn’t a perfectly even one given the one-day gap between the two measurement windows.

The sequel’s streaming success also outpaced other recent Disney live-action premieres, including ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ which had previously held the second-place spot with 14.3 million views in its first five days on Disney+. That comparison underscores just how significant this latest milestone is within Disney’s current live-action slate.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ reunites original stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci in their roles as Andy Sachs, Miranda Priestly, Emily Charlton, and Nigel Kipling, twenty years after the original 2006 film first introduced audiences to the cutthroat world of Runway magazine. The sequel follows Miranda as she navigates the ongoing decline of print media while facing fierce competition from her former assistant, Emily, who has since become a powerful executive in the luxury fashion industry.

Directed by David Frankel, who also helmed the original film, and written by returning screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, the sequel added a stacked roster of new cast members including Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, B.J. Novak, and Rachel Bloom. That blend of legacy stars and fresh faces appears to have resonated strongly with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The film’s theatrical run proved just as strong as its streaming debut, earning $220.6 million domestically and $691.4 million worldwide against a modest $100 million budget, according to Variety. That box office performance, combined with its now record-setting streaming numbers, suggests the film’s audience has continued to expand well beyond its initial theatrical release.

With critics and audiences responding warmly to the sequel’s blend of nostalgia and updated commentary on the modern media landscape, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ has cemented itself as one of the year’s standout legacy sequels both in theaters and now on streaming.
