‘The Diplomat’ Gets Renewed at Netflix Just Weeks After Its Latest Premiere, Confirming Kate Wyler Isn’t Going Anywhere
Few political dramas manage to end every season on a cliffhanger that makes viewers scramble for the next episode, and ‘The Diplomat‘ has turned that trick into a signature. Each finale seems to leave Kate Wyler in a more precarious position than the last, and each time, fans wonder if Netflix will bring her back. This time the answer came quickly, and the ‘The Diplomat’ renewal is now official.
Netflix premiered the fourth season on October 15, releasing all eight episodes at once. The season was shot across London and Italy and featured a secret plan involving a Russian nuclear weapon. It has been praised as a near-perfect return, with critics noting that the show still knows how to shock its audience.
Netflix has greenlit a fifth season just two weeks after the fourth season’s debut. The announcement confirmed that creator and showrunner Debora Cahn returns, and Netflix is keeping other details under wraps for now. Executive producers on season 4 included Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie, and that lineup is expected to carry over.
The speed is notable. Netflix typically makes renewal decisions several weeks after a season starts, based on viewership data, and the show had been sitting near the top of the platform’s rankings. It had also ranked second on Netflix’s TV series Top 10 shortly after its premiere.
There is a twist in how this renewal unfolded. One report notes that earlier seasons of ‘The Diplomat’ were renewed before the previous season even premiered, which makes the wait this time unusual. In the days leading up to the announcement, outlets were still describing the renewal status as pending, even though the show had strong reviews and a prominent place in the rankings.
The delay may have caused some anxiety, but the result is a clear vote of confidence. The series has now been renewed for a fifth go-round after a run that began on April 20, 2023, with seasons following in October 2024, October 2025 and October 2026.

The renewal also follows a milestone for the show. Allison Janney won the series’ first Emmy in September, taking Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as President Grace Penn. Keri Russell has been nominated for three Primetime Emmys and three Golden Globes, and she has won an Actor Award.
Janney and Bradley Whitford, who plays Todd Penn, were promoted to series regulars this season. That gave the show another pair of ‘The West Wing’ alums at the center of its political games, and it deepened the show’s focus on two marriages under pressure.
The season 4 finale left Kate in a dramatic position. She had been leading a protest against President Penn at the G7 summit, a move that shocked viewers. Cahn has said the central question heading into the next season is why she did it.
The show’s creator has also been open about how she thinks about the ending. She has said she considered concluding the series with Kate as President, and Russell has said she would rather see Kate stay among the Foreign Service workers she has always championed, though she’ll follow wherever Cahn takes the character.

Season 4 starred Russell as Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, with David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh also in the main cast. Nana Mensah was promoted to series regular as well. Netflix hasn’t announced which cast members will return for season 5, so those details will have to wait.
Cahn described the fourth season as built on a foursome of Kate, Hal, Grace and Todd, two couples strapped into one car on a crumbling roller coaster. That structure has produced shifting alliances, including a growing bond between Grace and Hal and an uneasy partnership between Kate and Todd.
No release date has been announced for season 5, and production plans are still unclear. Given the show’s pattern of releasing each season in October, fans may have a long wait, but the renewal at least guarantees that the story isn’t over.
For now, the news is a relief for fans who feared the show’s fate was uncertain. Kate Wyler’s career in diplomacy isn’t ending yet.
