Casting news in the DC Universe rarely stays quiet for long, and the newest announcement has fans buzzing about the next generation of Batman’s sidekicks. The project at the center of it is a puppet-animated feature that puts the original Robins in the spotlight.

‘Dynamic Duo‘ flips the usual superhero formula by focusing on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd in their early days instead of the Dark Knight himself. It is a joint effort between Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, DC Studios, Matt Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho and the New Orleans studio Swaybox.

The casting of Mason Thames as Dick Grayson has now been made official, and one of the first people to react was his girlfriend, Mckenna Grace. She responded on her Instagram Story, sharing the headline about the casting along with a childhood photo of Thames in a Robin costume.

Grace reposted a graphic announcing that DC Studios had officially confirmed its Dick Grayson casting, placing a photo of Thames beside a comic-style image of Robin. Beneath it, she added a one-word caption calling the news perfect, followed by a string of hearts and a few emojis.

The extra touch was the throwback picture of a young Thames dressed as Robin, which turned the post from a simple congratulations into something playful. For fans, it was a reminder that the actor was dreaming of this role long before it became real.

The reaction also fits the couple’s public warmth. Grace and Thames co-starred in ‘Regretting You’ and made their relationship Instagram official with a Valentine’s Day trip to Paris, after months of speculation. She also brought him as her date to the Oscars this year.

Mason Thames Is Officially Robin: DC Studios Locks In Its Dick Grayson

The official confirmation came from DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO Peter Safran, who told Collider that Thames will voice Dick Grayson, the original Robin. Safran described the role as a case of a volunteer rather than a recruit, noting that Thames had always wanted to play Dick Grayson and impressed everyone when he auditioned.

The news first surfaced in late September, when a report said the star of ‘The Black Phone’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ had landed the part. TheWrap and Deadline later backed it up, and Thames appeared to acknowledge it by sharing Nightwing comics on his Instagram story.

Before Safran’s confirmation, DC had not formally announced the casting. Now it is official, at least for the animated feature.

Logan Kim is reported to voice Jason Todd, the second Robin, though Safran did not mention him in his comments. Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi are cast as a pair of villains, Red Hood One and Red Hood Two.

The film isn’t intended to be part of the live-action DCU or Reeves’ Batman saga. Even so, it opens the door to Thames and Kim returning to their roles in live action down the road.

That possibility is worth watching, but nothing has been announced. For now, Thames’ confirmed role is limited to this animated feature.

Coverage has been careful to point out that DC Studios has not announced Thames as the live-action Dick Grayson. The DCU already has a planned live-action Batman feature, ‘The Brave and the Bold’, with Andy Muschietti attached to direct, and its story centers on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian.

That means the question of a live-action Nightwing or Robin remains open. Fans will have to wait to see whether Thames’ voice work becomes something more.

If it does, his Instagram-story history will suddenly look a lot like foreshadowing. Safran’s comments about wanting volunteers who love the characters suggest DC would be happy to keep him around.

Grace is about to have a big franchise moment of her own. She plays Maysilee Donner in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, which opens in theaters on Nov. 20.

That means both halves of the couple will soon be tied to major franchises, and fans are already enjoying the timing. Whatever comes next for Thames in the DCU, he has an enthusiastic supporter in Grace.

Should Mason Thames also play Dick Grayson in live-action DC projects?
