Disney’s new Star Wars project, The Acolyte, finally premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with two episodes. Many fans were worried about how it would turn out. The series was already controversial before it premiered because no one knew what to expect. Showrunner Leslye Headland added to the controversy with her comments about the show and the franchise, which some fans found outrageous. Although the show has faced intense review bombing, critics are pleased with it, which has added to the debate. Episode 3, “Destiny,” just came out and is already one of the most controversial episodes so far.

The official synopsis for the episode is: “A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes but discovers the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”

The third episode was pretty exciting, revealing some interesting plot details and setting up more mysteries, which is expected for the third episode of an eight-episode series. “Destiny” expanded the storyline and gave a lot of background information, leaving the impression that it was both frustrating and good. The good thing is we just need to wait for more episodes to clear up the mysteries, so it’s not a major issue.

What bothers some fans is the content of the episode, which some have called too woke. The focus is on female characters, and it’s surprising that in the 21st century, some people are still upset by female leads in fiction. The Internet is divided again, with some fans saying the episode is too woke for their tastes, while others defend it, saying the criticisms are exaggerated and the so-called woke content isn’t that intense.

Some of the comments, as reported by The Hindustan Times, include:

Wow 8 minutes into The Acolyte episode 3 and I’m already done. I don’t even think this is the “controversial” part. This isn’t Star Wars anymore. I hate it here.

Since “Star Wars is dead” now and The Acolyte is pure “woke propaganda garbage”, we shouldn’t be hearing from these people who griped so much about episodes 1 and 2 right? They won’t torture themselves in episode 3 and then complain even more right??

Episode 3 of #TheAcolyte was very interesting, & very, very unique…always love seeing the particular interpretations of what the Force means to different cultures throughout the galaxy. It’s the same energy, yet not everyone connects with it the same way. Great episode.

It was a total pile of s**t. This is like Power Rangers quality storytelling

ok then. Just finished Episode 3 of #TheAcolyte… what exactly was the problem?? I’ve read many people say this episode was going to stink and destroy Star Wars. What exactly did I miss? Am I crazy, that was probably the best episode out of the first 3 so far lol

Episode 3 does not deserve all the hate it got over the last week. The “woke” themes were very subtle and were blown out of proportion online.

As you can see, opinions are divided, but based on the comments and our own impression of the episode, it seems like the negative comments are mostly from fans who don’t like seeing women lead a show. This might not be exactly like the original Star Wars movies, but the franchise has evolved. There’s no reason to dislike a show just because it focuses on female characters or other groups some people don’t like.
