The Latest ‘Echo’ Trailer Confirms the Canonicity of Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Series

Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the largest, if not the largest, interconnected cinematic universes and, as such, has plenty of projects under its umbrella. But before Disney+ started creating mini-series, Netflix had it’s own “DefenderVerse” that was connected to the MCU, although the events that transpired in the shows were largely ignored by the primary MCU movies and the subsequent projects.

The Defenders Saga, also known as Street-Level Heroes or Marvel Knights, is a series of Marvel Television shows on Netflix. Centered around the vigilantes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in New York City, it starts with ‘Daredevil’ first season and wraps up with ‘Jessica Jones’ third season. And despite technically being set in the MCU, the fans have long doubted that the shows were canon to the MCU.

This is going to change with the release of the upcoming Marvel Spotlight series ‘Echo’ as the original footage from the Netflix ‘Daredevil’ series was used in the trailer. You can check out the trailer below.

Although there was uncertainty about the canonicity of Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ in the past, it is now increasingly evident that Marvel Studios recognizes the TV show as part of the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Addressing previous speculation, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, clarified that ‘Daredevil’ is officially considered “part of the Sacred Timeline” by the studio, especially in the lead-up to ‘Echo.’

It was a lot to balance anyway, but now that some time has passed, now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I, personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying it is part of the Sacred Timeline.

So that settles it right? But things are also going to get confusing soon with the release of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ which is supposed to be a soft reboot of the Netflix series and might have some events that clash with previous “established” facts that were set up during the show that is apparently also canon. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is also listed as a standalone sequel to the DefenderVerse, so I think it’s safe to say we’re back at the beginning regarding canonicity status.
