‘The Legend of Ochi’ Director Slams Hollywood’s “Corporatized” Fantasy Movies for Kids

Isaiah Saxon, director of the fantasy-adventure film The Legend of Ochi, has expressed concerns over the commercialization of children’s fantasy films in Hollywood.

He believes that the industry has become “corporatized,” making it challenging for independent filmmakers to create movies that resonate with young audiences.

This kind of genre has unfortunately been corporatized. All the touchpoints that we have are 30 and 40-year-olds, for people doing this genre correctly in a way that feels authentic and real and those films that were made then, they weren’t referencing other films, they were just making their passion art project, they happened to channel these feelings of innocence and childhood.

I’ve been trying to reach kids with my work for like a decade,” Saxon said. “Kids are basically behind a giant corporate garden. It’s hard to make an indie movie that reaches kids… that’s why this took so long to make.”

The Legend of Ochi tells the story of a young girl named Yuri, played by Helena Zengel, who embarks on a journey to return a mythical creature, the Ochi, to its family. The film features a blend of puppetry, animatronics, and minimal CGI, aiming to capture the magic of classic fantasy films.

Saxon emphasized the importance of tactile craftsmanship and authenticity in storytelling, aiming to empower children with narratives that are both imaginative and grounded.

The film, produced by A24, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters nationwide on April 25, 2025. It has been praised for its unique approach to fantasy filmmaking and its commitment to practical effects.

Saxon’s comments highlight a broader conversation about the challenges independent filmmakers face in an industry dominated by large studios and commercial interests. His dedication to creating a film that stays true to its artistic vision serves as a testament to the possibilities of independent cinema in the realm of children’s fantasy storytelling.
