The movie is directed by Jon Favreau, who also co-wrote the script with longtime Star Wars creative partner Dave Filoni.
Favreau originally planned to continue the story with a fourth season of The Mandalorian on Disney+, but the 2023 Hollywood strikes paused production. During that time, Lucasfilm decided to push forward with a film instead of more episodes. The project was officially announced in January 2024.
Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter at the heart of the story, alongside his tiny companion Grogu, created with puppetry and visual effects. They won’t be the only familiar faces, though.
The movie adds Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward, a New Republic leader and former Rebel pilot. Jeremy Allen White joins as Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba, and Jonny Coyne appears as an Imperial warlord leading the remnants of the Empire. Fans of Star Wars Rebels will also notice the return of Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, plus members of the Anzellan species, who were last seen in The Mandalorian series.
Filming began in California in August 2024 and wrapped later that year in December, according to reports. Now, with the poster revealed, excitement for the movie’s release is growing fast.
This film feels like the natural next step for the Star Wars universe on the big screen. Moving from Disney+ to theaters shows how much faith Lucasfilm has in the characters of Din Djarin and Grogu.
