‘The Matrix’ Director Lily Wachowski Praises Christopher Nolan for Casting Elliot Page in ‘The Odyssey’

Trans representation in Hollywood has remained a persistent talking point throughout 2026, with industry insiders and advocates alike questioning just how much progress the entertainment world has actually made behind the scenes. For every headline-grabbing casting choice, there’s usually a much quieter conversation happening about who still isn’t getting called.

That tension came into sharp focus recently around Elliot Page, whose acclaimed turn in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ became one of the year’s most talked-about performances. Despite the film’s massive commercial success, Page revealed in a recent podcast appearance that the buzz surrounding his role hadn’t translated into new job offers.

Now filmmaker Lily Wachowski has weighed in on that exact disconnect, offering praise for Nolan while pointedly criticizing the rest of the industry. Speaking with Variety, Wachowski said, “You’ve got to hand it to Christopher Nolan for casting Elliot in the first place,” calling it a genuine example of allyship, a sentiment she shared in comments reported by Variety.

Wachowski didn’t stop at praising Nolan, though. She used the moment to raise a much broader question about accountability across Hollywood, asking pointedly why more people with casting power aren’t following his example and suggesting the industry may be too entrenched in old habits to change.

Page starred as Sinon, a Greek soldier tied to the Trojan horse plot, in Nolan’s sprawling adaptation of Homer’s epic. The role marked his first collaboration with the director since 2010’s ‘Inception,’ and reunited him with a filmmaker Page has repeatedly credited with helping him access some of his most comfortable, confident work as an actor.

‘The Odyssey’ has since crossed $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, making it one of the biggest theatrical successes of the year. Yet despite that scale of exposure, Page said during an appearance on the “On Film… With Kevin McCarthy” podcast that he hasn’t received a single acting offer since the film’s release, joking, “If someone wants to call me,” a comment reported by The Wrap.

Page went further in that same conversation, suggesting the drought wasn’t a coincidence tied to scheduling or industry slowdown, but something more specific to how Hollywood now perceives him following his transition. He noted that casting has become noticeably more difficult for him, attributing it to reasons he described as fairly obvious.

Wachowski’s comments arrive with added weight given her own history navigating Hollywood as a trans filmmaker. Best known for co-directing ‘The Matrix’ trilogy, she’s continued working on new projects through her recently launched studio, Anarchists United, while remaining vocal about the barriers trans creatives and actors still face in getting greenlit.

Her frustration wasn’t aimed at any single studio or executive, but at what she views as a systemic unwillingness among decision-makers to take the same risk Nolan did. She specifically called out the gap between private admiration for trans talent and the industry’s continued reluctance to actually cast trans actors in high-profile roles.

That criticism lands at a moment when Page’s casting itself had already become something of a flashpoint. His role in ‘The Odyssey’ drew backlash from right-wing commentators ahead of the film’s release, criticism that Nolan publicly dismissed as irrelevant to the film itself.

Whether Wachowski’s comments spark any real shift in hiring practices remains to be seen, but they’ve clearly struck a nerve in an industry still working through what genuine inclusion looks like beyond a single high-profile casting choice. For now, both Wachowski and Page seem to agree that one blockbuster role, however celebrated, isn’t the same as lasting change.
