The MCU X-Men Reboot Rumor Mill Just Added Two Fan-Favorite Founding Members

Marvel’s mutant reboot has spent the better part of a month dominating entertainment headlines, with new casting whispers seemingly popping up every few days. Between confirmed names, rumored frontrunners, and outright denials, keeping track of who might actually show up in Jake Schreier’s vision of the X-Men has become something of a full-time job for fans.

Much of that chatter has centered on the same handful of characters so far, namely Professor Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops, Rogue, and Beast, as reporters and insiders trade competing claims about who’s locked in. But the world of mutant lore stretches far beyond that core group, and a fresh report suggests Marvel may be digging even deeper into the source material than expected.

According to a new report from ComicBook.com, an industry scooper going by “James Mack” claims to have heard word about the actors being considered for two additional legacy characters: Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel, and Bobby Drake, aka Iceman. If accurate, their inclusion would round out the five founding members of the original 1960s ‘X-Men‘ comic lineup, alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Beast.

That founding roster, consisting of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, and Angel, predates the more internationally diverse team introduced in the 1975 issue ‘Giant-Size X-Men’ #1, which brought in characters like Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine. With over a decade of comic stories built around that original five, there’s plenty of material for Marvel Studios to pull from if this direction holds up.

The timing lines up with other recent reporting suggesting the reboot is leaning heavily into a younger, more classic-comics feel. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ effectively functioned as a backdoor pilot for the project, introducing Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey with a reworked backstory centered on grief, trauma, and the discovery of her telepathic and telekinetic abilities.

That emotional throughline mirrors the tone of the earliest X-Men comics, which followed a group of young, awkward mutants learning to function as a team while wrestling with typical adolescent struggles layered on top of superpowers. Reports also suggest this younger core cast could be paired with more seasoned mutants serving as instructors at Xavier’s school, flipping the format fans are used to from the original ‘Giant-Size X-Men’ era.

None of this is confirmed by Marvel Studios, and as with most casting rumors swirling around this project, it’s worth treating the Angel and Iceman reports with some caution until official word comes down. Still, the fact that two more original team members are even being floated suggests Marvel’s ambitions for this reboot go well beyond a simple retread of familiar faces.

‘The X-Men’ is currently in production under director Jake Schreier, fresh off his work on ‘Thunderbolts*,’ though no official release date has been announced yet. Given how much speculation has already built up around the cast, all eyes are expected to turn toward D23 later this month for any official confirmations.

Whether Angel and Iceman actually make the final cut remains to be seen, but their addition to the rumor mill only adds to the sense that Marvel is building something far more comprehensive than a stripped-down origin story. For now, fans will just have to keep watching the scoopers and wait for D23 to sort fact from speculation.
