The Movie Tom Cruise Will Always Regret Making
Tom Cruise has one of the biggest careers in Hollywood, but even he has spoken about a movie experience he did not enjoy. According to past interviews, the film that left him disappointed was the 1985 fantasy movie Legend.
The movie was directed by Ridley Scott and featured Cruise as Jack, a young hero trying to stop the Lord of Darkness from destroying the last unicorns and bringing chaos to the world. Over time, the film gained a loyal fan base and became known for its unique visuals and dark fantasy style.
Even with that later success, Cruise made it clear that making the movie was not a good experience for him. He said, I’ll never want to do another picture like that again. His main issue was with the editing process after filming ended.
Reports from past interviews say Cruise felt the final version moved too quickly and removed important character moments. He believed the movie lost much of the larger story and emotional depth that had been created during production.
The making of Legend was also physically and mentally difficult. Large sets were built at Pinewood Studios, and one of them famously caught fire during the production. The demanding shoot lasted close to a year.
Cruise also spoke about how hard it was to perform in that kind of fantasy environment before modern visual effects became common. Many scenes required actors to imagine creatures, locations, and effects that were not really there during filming.
He explained, It’s stunning and gorgeous and poetic, and most of the time, I would be looking at a piece of black tape and having to imagine all of it. He was also frustrated by the way some media outlets described the film at the time.
In comments to Rolling Stone, Cruise pushed back against the coverage and said, First of all, the press kind of took that and blew it out of proportion. It’s a movie-movie. Even though Cruise has regrets about the project, Legend still has a strong reputation among fantasy fans today.
Many viewers praise Ridley Scott’s style and Tim Curry’s unforgettable performance as the Lord of Darkness. Cruise has moved far beyond that chapter and remains one of the biggest names in film. He recently appeared at CinemaCon with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu to preview their new film Digger.
The upcoming movie reportedly shows Cruise in a very different role as Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil tycoon. Speaking at the event, Cruise said, It took 40 years to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell.
The film is expected later this year and follows the strong success of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. While Legend may be the movie Cruise wishes had gone differently, it also remains a reminder that even difficult projects can find lasting appreciation over time.
