For two films that opened months apart and have already crossed staggering milestones, remaining neck-and-neck on a random Monday in late August says a lot about their combined grip on this year’s theatrical marketplace.
That competitive tightness reflects the broader story of these two films all summer long. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent four straight weekends at number one, a feat matched by few films in recent memory, while ‘The Odyssey’ has quietly built one of the steadiest, most durable runs of Nolan’s career despite its nearly three-hour runtime and R rating.
The scale of both films’ success has been staggering. ‘The Odyssey’ has already crossed $1 billion worldwide, becoming Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever and surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ in the process. Domestically, the film has climbed past $539 million, positioning it as Nolan’s second-biggest release ever in North America behind only ‘The Dark Knight.’
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been just as historic, recently becoming the fastest movie ever to reach $500 million domestically, achieving the feat in just seven days and beating out ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for that record. The film has continued piling up milestones since, closing in on $855 million domestically and threatening to challenge ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ for the all-time domestic crown.
Together, the two films fueled what became the biggest collective weekend in box office history back in late July, with roughly $430 million pouring in across the marketplace in a single frame. That kind of combined firepower has helped push the overall 2026 domestic box office well ahead of the previous year’s pace, offering theater owners a genuinely encouraging sign after years of pandemic-era uncertainty.
Even as both films settle into their later weeks of release, neither appears ready to fade quietly. Premium formats have continued to play a major role in sustaining ticket sales for both titles, with IMAX in particular splitting its screen real estate between the two throughout their overlapping runs.
For an industry that spent years wondering whether audiences would still show up for original, big-budget spectacle, ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ have offered about as clear an answer as Hollywood could ask for.
