‘The Odyssey’ Director Christopher Nolan Calls AI a “Trojan Horse Made of Glass” and Explains Why Nobody’s Fooled

Christopher Nolan has never been shy about his skepticism toward modern technology, famously avoiding smartphones while championing practical filmmaking techniques throughout his career. That reputation has only grown louder in recent weeks as he continues promoting ‘The Odyssey,’ a film whose central mythology has given him a particularly fitting lens through which to discuss one of the tech industry’s most controversial subjects.

He noted that he has never seen a technology advance so rapidly while being so completely rejected by the public, pointing specifically to the extreme suspicion coming from younger generations.

That generational skepticism became a central focus of Nolan’s broader comments. He pointed to how quickly people his children’s age dismiss AI generated videos online, coining and embracing the term AI slop as a way of immediately categorizing and rejecting low effort content. According to Nolan, that kind of healthy skepticism should be applied not just to the technology itself, but to the motives of the people introducing it, arguing that approach leads to getting the best out of any new technology rather than blind faith that everything will simply work out.

These comments follow an earlier round of remarks Nolan made addressing controversy surrounding ‘The Odyssey’ itself, where he dismissed criticism over the film’s casting choices as irrelevant, framing adaptation as an inherently interpretive process. That willingness to address hot button topics directly has become something of a pattern throughout this particular press cycle.

Nolan’s skepticism toward AI carries extra institutional weight given his role as president of the Directors Guild of America, which recently secured generative AI protections in its most recent contract negotiations. That position places him at the center of an industry-wide conversation that intensified significantly during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes.

The irony of Nolan’s comments has not gone unnoticed given his own reputation for resisting modern technology while simultaneously pushing cinematic innovation to its limits. ‘The Odyssey’ itself became the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX film and cameras, a technical achievement that positions Nolan as both a skeptic of digital shortcuts and a genuine pioneer of practical filmmaking.
