‘The Odyssey’ Director Christopher Nolan Calls Tom Holland “One of the Greatest Actors of His Generation”
Christopher Nolan has shared high praise for Tom Holland ahead of the release of The Odyssey, calling the young actor one of the best performers of his generation. The filmmaker spoke about working with Holland for the first time and explained why he believes the actor was the right choice to play Telemachus in the upcoming epic.
Speaking about Holland, Nolan said he had admired the actor for years before they finally worked together on a film.
“I’d never had the chance to work with Tom before, but have long admired his extraordinary talent. Working with him confirmed for me that he’s one of the great actors of his generation, bringing commitment and focus to his work that combines raw talent with a disciplined process aimed at inhabiting the truth of the character. The Odyssey is, in large part, the story of Telemachus’s coming of age, and Tom has brought a sensitive understanding of the layers and complexities of this character that are essential to the tale.”
The comments have attracted plenty of attention, especially because Nolan is known for being selective with his praise. His words highlight the important role Holland plays in the film, which focuses not only on Odysseus’ journey but also on Telemachus as he grows into adulthood while searching for his missing father.
The Odyssey is Nolan’s latest film and is based on Homer’s famous ancient Greek epic. The story follows Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. During his long journey, he faces mythical creatures and dangerous challenges while trying to reunite with his wife, Penelope, and his son.
Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, while Holland plays Telemachus. Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, with Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Bill Irwin, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page and several other well-known actors rounding out the ensemble.
Nolan wrote and directed the film, while he and his wife Emma Thomas produced it through their company, Syncopy. Universal Pictures is distributing the project.
The movie became one of Nolan’s biggest productions. With a reported budget of around $250 million, it is among the most expensive films of his career. It is also the first feature to be filmed entirely using IMAX’s 70mm cameras.
Production took place across several countries, including Greece, Morocco, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Malta and Western Sahara. The large-scale locations were chosen to capture the world of ancient Greece as realistically as possible.
Leading up to the release, The Odyssey has already sparked discussion among movie fans and historians. Some have debated its costumes, casting choices, accents and interpretation of Greek mythology. Nolan has said he wanted to create a grounded version of the classic story while still embracing its legendary creatures and fantasy elements.
Tom Holland’s role is expected to be one of the emotional centers of the movie. While Damon carries the main adventure as Odysseus, Holland’s Telemachus represents the next generation and his search for answers about the father he barely knows.
The Odyssey will premiere in London on July 6 before opening in theaters in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 17. It will also be released in IMAX and other premium formats, giving audiences the chance to experience Nolan’s latest epic on the biggest screens possible.
