‘The Odyssey’ Director Christopher Nolan Reveals When His Next Movie Will Finally Arrive
Christopher Nolan has finally brought one of his biggest dream projects to the screen with ‘The Odyssey’, but fans hoping another film will arrive in just a few years may need to be patient. According to the filmmaker himself, audiences should not expect another Nolan movie anytime soon.
During an interview with TODAY while promoting ‘The Odyssey’, Nolan revealed that his next film is still a long way off. When asked if audiences would have to wait another three years, similar to the gap between ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘The Odyssey’, the director gave a simple answer. “Oh, at least.”
It is the clearest timeline Nolan has shared so far, and it suggests his next project will not arrive before 2029, if not later.
The director explained that making ‘The Odyssey’ was one of the most demanding experiences of his career. Although he had wanted to adapt Homer’s epic poem for around 20 years, actually bringing it to life turned out to be an enormous challenge.
Speaking to TODAY, Nolan said he finally reached a point in his career where a film on this scale could become a reality.“Now, I can get something made that I couldn’t otherwise get made. For me to take on Greek mythology on a big modern cinematic canvas is something that hasn’t been done.”
He also believes the story has remained popular for thousands of years because it combines many different genres into one adventure. “There’s so much in it for everybody. It’s a love story. It’s a coming-of-age story. It’s a story about war and homecoming. And I think that’s the eternal appeal of ‘The Odyssey.’”

While the finished film looks spectacular on screen, Nolan admitted the production was just as difficult as the story itself.
He recalled one of his early conversations with star Matt Damon before filming began. Nolan warned the actor that making the movie would be extremely tough, but he believes Damon did not fully understand until production was underway.
“I have a feeling he didn’t really understand until we got on the boat,” Nolan said. “It’s not until you get there and you start, you know, hiking up a goat’s path to cyclops’ cave.”
According to Nolan, that was the moment Damon realized the production would push everyone involved to their limits.
The Oscar-winning director admitted the shoot became physically exhausting for both himself and the crew.
“I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. I mean, it’s ‘The Odyssey,’ of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of ‘The Odyssey’ if it doesn’t seem difficult.”
Part of that challenge came from Nolan’s commitment to making cinematic history. ‘The Odyssey’ became the first Hollywood feature filmed entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, something the director had dreamed about for years.
He explained that using the format was essential because he wanted audiences to feel like they were standing beside Odysseus during every part of the journey.
“For ‘The Odyssey,’ I went to IMAX and I said, ‘Look, if ever we are going to fulfill this dream of shooting the entire movie that way, this is the one. This is ‘The Odyssey.’”
How do you feel about Christopher Nolan taking at least three years before releasing another movie?
Nolan added that the technology finally allowed him to achieve a goal he had been working toward throughout his career.
Now that ‘The Odyssey’ has reached theaters, Nolan says he simply hopes audiences enjoy the adventure. But while fans celebrate his latest epic, they should also prepare for a long wait before his next film arrives. If the director’s own estimate is correct, moviegoers will not be seeing another Christopher Nolan project for at least three more years.
