‘The Odyssey’ Is Eyeing an Epic Finish at the Worldwide Box Office

Christopher Nolan has spent his career building a reputation for delivering theatrical experiences that defy typical box office patterns, but even by his standards, ‘The Odyssey’ has become an unusual success story. The nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has spent the summer proving that adult-skewing spectacle can still draw massive crowds, even against a marketplace dominated by franchise sequels and comic book adaptations.

That success has only accelerated since the film expanded into international markets it had yet to reach. ‘The Odyssey’ has already become Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ to claim that title after just four weekends in theaters, according to Deadline. The film crossed $1 billion worldwide faster than any Nolan release since 2012, with Universal now counting it among the studio’s biggest hits of the year.

That momentum has continued building as ‘The Odyssey’ rolled out across Asia. The film’s worldwide total climbed to roughly $1.17 billion even before its Chinese release fully kicked in, and its opening in mainland China has significantly outpaced expectations, with early previews and presales already ranking among the strongest post-pandemic debuts for a Hollywood release in that market. With China now fully in play alongside upcoming releases in Japan and South Korea, industry trackers have started projecting the film could ultimately finish somewhere in the range of $1.6 billion worldwide.

That projection would place ‘The Odyssey’ well ahead of Universal’s prior benchmarks for the year, positioning it among the studio’s biggest all-time global releases before any inflation adjustments. The film’s China rollout alone has already outperformed the opening weekends of major franchise titles like ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ and ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ within its first two days.

Much of that international strength has been fueled by the film’s exceptional performance in premium large-format theaters. ‘The Odyssey’ has already become Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time worldwide, and its China rollout leaned heavily into that same strategy, with the film securing roughly 90% of the country’s nearly 800-screen Imax network despite ongoing competition from ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’

Media Partners Asia senior analyst Adrian Tong told Variety that Nolan’s own box office history in China, where ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Tenet’ each finished around $61 million, offers the most useful benchmark for what to expect, calling a nine-figure run in the country an exceptional outcome given how rarely Hollywood films outside the biggest franchises reach that level there anymore.

What makes ‘The Odyssey’s’ trajectory particularly notable is the genre it belongs to. Sword-and-sandal epics rarely receive blockbuster-scale budgets or marketing pushes in the current era, and the film’s R rating limits its audience even further compared to typical summer tentpoles. Despite those constraints, ‘The Odyssey’ has held remarkably steady week over week, with its second weekend drop coming in at just 30%, a notably gentler decline than Nolan’s own ‘Oppenheimer’ experienced during its record-breaking 2023 run.

With China, Japan, and South Korea still adding to its total and Imax demand showing no signs of slowing down, ‘The Odyssey’ looks increasingly likely to close out its theatrical run as one of the defining box office stories of Nolan’s career.
