‘The Odyssey’ Is on Pace to Become Christopher Nolan’s Highest-Grossing Film Ever

Summer blockbusters rarely arrive with the kind of built-in prestige this one carried into theaters. Following an Oscar-sweeping best picture win and years of anticipation, Christopher Nolan’s next project needed to clear an unusually high bar just to be considered a success by his own standards.

That bar has already been cleared, and then some. ‘The Odyssey’ launched to $264.1 million worldwide during its opening weekend, marking the biggest global debut of Nolan’s entire career and surpassing his previous record holder, 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which opened to $249 million.

Now, with the film continuing to hold strong through its second week in theaters, box office watchers are increasingly convinced it could finish its run as Nolan’s single highest-grossing film of all time. A Manifold prediction market tracking whether the film crosses the billion-dollar mark globally sat at a 64 percent implied probability just days after its record setting opening weekend.

That kind of confidence puts ‘The Odyssey’ in position to challenge Nolan’s current career benchmark, ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which finished its theatrical run at $1.08 billion worldwide. Given how dramatically ‘The Odyssey’ has already outpaced that film’s opening numbers, surpassing its final total is no longer viewed as a long shot among industry trackers.

The film has also been directly compared to Nolan’s most recent effort, ‘Oppenheimer,’ which won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture but ultimately grossed just shy of a billion dollars worldwide. ‘The Odyssey’ has consistently outpaced that film’s own box office trajectory at nearly every comparable point in its release, according to Forbes analysis tracking both films side by side.

Some prediction markets have gone even further, suggesting the film could eventually chase down the $1.338 billion record currently held by ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ for the highest-grossing R-rated release of all time. Given that ‘The Odyssey’ already claimed the top R-rated opening of the year and Universal’s biggest ever weekend launch for an R-rated film, that comparison no longer feels like pure speculation.

Much of that momentum traces back to the film’s unusually strong critical reception, currently sitting at ninety-five percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, among the best reviewed entries of Nolan’s entire filmography. Pairing that critical acclaim with an A CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences has helped fuel the kind of sustained word of mouth that typically separates a merely strong opener from a genuine long-term box office phenomenon.

International expansion still has plenty of room to contribute as well, with the film having yet to open in several major markets including South Korea, China and Japan at the time of its record-setting debut. Those additional territories represent significant untapped box office potential still waiting to be added to the film’s growing global total.

IMAX chief executive Rich Gelfond has already pointed to the format’s outsized role in the film’s success, noting that premium large format screens have helped transform the release into more than just a blockbuster but a genuine global cultural event. With some IMAX locations already selling out screenings five weeks into their run, that kind of sustained demand bodes well for the film’s long-term earning potential.
