‘The Odyssey’ Just Blew past Another Box Office Milestone Few Films Ever Reach

Christopher Nolan has spent this summer proving that a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of an ancient Greek epic can still dominate multiplexes the way a superhero tentpole would. Few directors could have pulled off a bet this unconventional, yet ‘The Odyssey’ has spent week after week defying the usual rules of how blockbusters are supposed to perform.

That film, Nolan’s sprawling take on Homer’s classic poem, follows Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside an ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o and Robert Pattinson. Shot entirely on IMAX film cameras since its July 17 debut, it has spent the better part of six weeks steadily climbing box office charts most modern releases can only dream of reaching.

Now the film has crossed yet another staggering threshold. According to updated estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ has passed the $1.5 billion mark globally, pulling in an additional $48.7 million internationally over the weekend, pushing its estimated international total to $988.8 million and its overall global tally to roughly $1.553 billion.

That milestone places the film in genuinely rare company. ‘The Odyssey’ had already become the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time behind only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and it now stands as Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, having previously overtaken 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ just weeks after crossing the billion-dollar threshold.

The film’s staying power has become just as remarkable as its scale. It reached $1 billion worldwide faster than expected, becoming the third Nolan film ever to hit that mark alongside ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and its unusually slim weekend-over-weekend drops have kept it a fixture in premium IMAX and large-format screens well past its opening month.

Much of that consistency traces back to the film’s international rollout, which staggered major markets across the summer rather than opening everywhere at once. ‘The Odyssey’ launched in South Korea in early August before expanding into China and Japan later that month, giving the film fresh waves of ticket sales even as its domestic run matured.

Domestically, the film has already climbed into rare territory as well, becoming just the twenty-fourth movie in history to cross the half-billion mark in North America. Combined with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ another 2026 juggernaut also closing in on historic milestones, Nolan’s epic has helped push this year’s box office toward the strongest summer the industry has seen since before the pandemic.

With awards season conversations already beginning to swirl around the film, and its theatrical run showing no clear signs of slowing down, ‘The Odyssey’ looks positioned to keep climbing the all-time global chart in the weeks ahead. Few directors working today have managed to turn something this ambitious into a genuine box office phenomenon quite like Nolan has this summer.
