‘The Odyssey’ Just Crossed a Massive Box Office Milestone, and It’s Now the Team to Beat at the Oscars

Christopher Nolan has built a career out of blockbusters that also happen to win over critics, but even by his standards, this latest release has been operating on another level entirely. What began as a genuinely uncertain box office bet, an R-rated, nearly three-hour mythological epic, has instead turned into one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the year.

That success has only compounded week after week, with the film continuing to add hundreds of millions to its total long after most blockbusters would have started fading from theaters. Now, more than a month into its release, ‘The Odyssey‘ has reached a milestone that firmly cements its place among the year’s defining cinematic events.

‘The Odyssey’ has officially surpassed $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, according to Kalshi Film. That kind of run puts Nolan’s mythological epic in rarefied territory, especially for a film built around Homer’s ancient poem rather than an existing franchise or established piece of intellectual property.

The film’s box office dominance has run in parallel with an equally strong showing in the awards conversation. According to prediction market data, ‘The Odyssey’ has consistently sat atop Kalshi’s Best Picture market throughout the summer, with traders pricing Nolan’s film as the clear favorite to win the category at this coming awards season.

That frontrunner status hasn’t wavered much since the film’s release in July. Kalshi’s Best Picture nomination market has placed ‘The Odyssey’ at a near-certain probability of securing a nomination, while its win probability has fluctuated between roughly 50 and 60 percent depending on the week, consistently well ahead of closer competitors like ‘Dune: Part Three.’

Much of that awards momentum traces back to the film’s critical reception, which has been overwhelmingly positive since it hit theaters. Nolan’s script has also drawn strong recognition in its own right, landing among the top contenders in Best Adapted Screenplay predictions alongside other awards-season heavyweights.

Nolan’s box office track record only adds to the sense that ‘The Odyssey’ is operating at a historic level. The film has already become the highest-grossing release of his career, and its consistent weekend performance, including a run of strong holds that outpaced several of his own prior films, has kept it near the top of the charts for weeks on end.

The film’s climb has also been striking in raw dollar terms. It has reportedly crossed $1.55 billion worldwide on a production budget of around $250 million, and is now being eyed by industry watchers as a potential $1.8 billion finish once its theatrical run concludes.

None of this guarantees the film will actually take home the Best Picture statue when awards season wraps up. Plenty of previous frontrunners have faded as fall festivals introduce new contenders and voter sentiment shifts closer to nomination time.

For now, though, ‘The Odyssey’ stands in a genuinely unique position, a critical and commercial juggernaut that has managed to dominate both the box office charts and the early awards conversation simultaneously.
