‘The Odyssey’ Just Joined an Extremely Exclusive Box Office Club
Christopher Nolan has spent decades building a reputation as one of the few directors whose name alone can move box office numbers, but even by his standards, 2026 has been an unusually dominant year. ‘The Odyssey,’ his sprawling adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, arrived with a massive ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson, and the film has spent every week since its release rewriting expectations for what an adult-skewing, nearly three-hour drama can accomplish theatrically in a marketplace still dominated by franchise sequels.

As of Saturday morning, the film was projected to earn a three-day total of $23 million by the end of its fifth weekend, according to Deadline, pushing its cumulative domestic gross to $504.4 million. That total makes ‘The Odyssey’ just the 24th movie in history to cross the half-billion mark domestically, closing out its first full month in theaters with a milestone few films ever reach.
Reaching $500 million domestically remains a genuinely rare accomplishment even among successful blockbusters, and ‘The Odyssey’ getting there in under five weeks places it in company that includes only a small handful of true box office giants. Given the film’s adult-oriented subject matter and lengthy runtime, hitting that number this quickly caught even seasoned box office analysts off guard.
With momentum still building, ‘The Odyssey’ appears positioned to climb even higher on the all-time domestic chart in the coming weeks. According to Deadline, continued strong holds could push its cumulative total toward $532.4 million, which would allow it to surpass both 2017’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and 2019’s ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,’ landing it at 22nd on the all-time domestic list.
Should that trajectory continue, ‘The Odyssey’ would also become the highest-grossing Christopher Nolan movie ever at the domestic box office, unadjusted for inflation, surpassing even ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Oppenheimer.’ That distinction would cement the film as the definitive commercial peak of Nolan’s career so far, following his blockbuster run with Universal after departing Warner Bros. and marking a striking validation of the studio’s bet on his particular brand of prestige filmmaking.
‘The Odyssey’s’ success has also contributed to a genuinely historic year at the box office more broadly. The film’s climb past $1 billion worldwide made 2026 the year with the most billion-dollar hits of the decade so far, joining ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘Michael,’ and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ in that exclusive tier.
That kind of concentrated box office strength across multiple genres and studios reflects a broader theatrical rebound that many industry analysts weren’t expecting this strongly, this fast. Universal in particular has benefited enormously from Nolan’s move to the studio, with his films now ranking among its highest-grossing live-action releases of all time. With awards season buzz already building around the film and its box office run still far from finished, ‘The Odyssey’ looks set to remain one of 2026’s defining cinematic stories through the rest of the year.
