‘The Odyssey’ Just Sailed Past ‘Logan’ and ‘Joker’ to Join Box Office History

The summer movie season has already produced its fair share of surprises, but few filmmakers can generate the kind of global anticipation that Christopher Nolan commands. His name alone has become a marketing tool, capable of turning an ancient Greek epic into one of the most talked-about theatrical events of the year. That reputation was put to the test this weekend, and the results have left industry watchers stunned.

Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ finally hit international screens after a rollout that began weeks earlier with a London premiere. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, the film had already built momentum through sold-out IMAX 70mm screenings and glowing early reviews.

Universal poured 250 million dollars into production and another 125 million dollars into marketing, making this weekend’s performance a make-or-break moment.

It was very much a make moment. ‘The Odyssey’ pulled in 139.6 million dollars from 73 international markets, giving it a worldwide opening of 264.1 million dollars once combined with its 124.5 million dollar domestic haul. That international number alone stands as Nolan’s biggest overseas debut ever, and the film achieved it without releasing yet in Korea, China, or Japan, three major markets still to come later this year.

That global total puts ‘The Odyssey’ ahead of every previous Nolan release at the worldwide box office, surpassing the 180.4 million dollar opening of ‘Oppenheimer’ in 2023. It also edges out the openings of both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ the two Batman films that had long represented the high water mark of Nolan’s box office career. For a filmmaker who built his reputation on Gotham City, watching an original epic outperform his own superhero trilogy is no small statement.

The film’s rating adds another layer to the achievement. As an R-rated release, ‘The Odyssey’ now ranks among the biggest global openings ever for that category, trailing only the Deadpool franchise among R-rated films at the worldwide box office. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ still holds the top spot with its 444.1 million dollar global bow, followed by ‘Deadpool 2’ at 301.3 million dollars and the original ‘Deadpool’ at 265 million dollars.

Right behind those sits ‘The Odyssey,’ having already outpaced the global openings of both ‘Logan’ and ‘Joker,’ two films that once defined what an adult-skewing genre picture could do at the box office.

Beyond the franchise comparisons, ‘The Odyssey’ is also sitting comfortably among the biggest global openings of the year overall. Only ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ have opened bigger worldwide in 2026, and both of those are family-friendly animated films with a far wider built-in audience than an R-rated retelling of a three-thousand-year-old poem. That context makes Nolan’s achievement even more notable, since he pulled off this opening with a challenging, adult-oriented story and no existing franchise to lean on.

With Korea, China, and Japan still ahead on the release calendar, there is real reason to believe these numbers will keep climbing before ‘The Odyssey’ finishes its theatrical run. Combined with the lack of major new competition in the coming weeks, the film appears set up for a lengthy and lucrative stay in theaters. Fans and industry analysts alike are now watching closely to see just how high this odyssey can ultimately climb.
