The movie marks Nolan’s return after his Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer in 2023. This time, he is adapting Homer’s ancient epic poem into a large-scale cinematic experience.
Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, while Tom Holland appears as his son Telemachus. Anne Hathaway takes on the role of Penelope, Odysseus’s wife. The cast also includes a long list of major names such as Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, James Remar, Corey Hawkins, Samantha Morton, and John Leguizamo.
The film was shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, continuing Nolan’s long-standing commitment to large-format filmmaking. Production reportedly took place across several countries including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland, along with studio water tank work in the United States.
Nolan also worked again with several familiar collaborators on this project. Hoyte van Hoytema returned as cinematographer, along with editor Jennifer Lame, composer Ludwig Göransson, and visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson.
The film is produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas under their company Syncopy, with Thomas Hayslip serving as executive producer. Nolan is credited as writer, director, and producer.
Over the years, The Odyssey has been adapted in different forms, including films, television projects, and animation, but this version is being positioned as one of the most ambitious takes yet on the classic story.
