‘The Odyssey’ Set to Join ‘Jurassic World’ in Elite Universal Box Office Club

Universal Pictures has built its reputation over the decades largely on the strength of dependable franchises, from the ‘Fast & Furious’ saga to the ever-profitable ‘Jurassic’ universe. Original, standalone films rarely factor into the studio’s biggest commercial success stories, making genuine box office history that much harder to come by outside of an established series.

That’s what makes Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic ‘The Odyssey’ such an unusual case study for the studio. Since its release this summer, the film has steadily climbed through record after record, defying the typical expectations for how a three-hour, R-rated original release is supposed to perform at the domestic box office.

That climb is now poised to reach a genuinely historic milestone. ‘The Odyssey’ is set to cross $600 million domestically this weekend, which would make it only the second film in Universal’s entire history to reach that threshold, joining 2015’s ‘Jurassic World’ as the only other release to do so.

‘Jurassic World’ hit that mark on the strength of a massive built-in franchise following, eventually finishing its domestic run with $652.27 million, a total that still ranks among the highest-grossing releases of all time. That film benefited from decades of brand recognition tracing back to the original ‘Jurassic Park,’ giving it a level of pre-existing audience demand that few films can match.

‘The Odyssey’ has no such advantage working in its favor. As an original adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic with no prior franchise history, no built-in fanbase, and an R rating that typically caps a film’s broader commercial ceiling, its path to $600 million represents a fundamentally different kind of box office achievement than ‘Jurassic World’s’ more predictable blockbuster run.

That distinction matters even more given how differently these two films built toward their respective milestones. Where ‘Jurassic World’ relied on a massive, front-loaded opening weekend typical of franchise filmmaking, ‘The Odyssey’ has instead sustained itself through remarkably consistent week-over-week performance, recently setting the record for the longest stretch any R-rated film has ever maintained $1 million in single-day grosses.

That kind of staying power reflects a theatrical run built on repeat viewership and sustained word of mouth rather than a single opening weekend surge. Nolan’s film has continued drawing audiences back to premium formats like IMAX well into its second month of release, a pattern more commonly associated with awards-season slow burns than three-hour mythological blockbusters.

Nolan’s track record has made him something of an outlier in an industry increasingly dominated by sequels, reboots, and established intellectual property. His ability to consistently draw massive theatrical audiences to original concepts, from ‘Inception’ to ‘Oppenheimer,’ has made him one of the few filmmakers studios still trust to anchor a major release without leaning on existing franchise recognition.

‘The Odyssey’ crossing $600 million domestically only reinforces that reputation, placing an original story alongside one of the most reliably profitable franchises in modern Hollywood history. For Universal specifically, the achievement offers proof that a genuine box office phenomenon doesn’t necessarily require a built-in fanbase, so long as the right filmmaker and the right theatrical experience are behind it.

Whether ‘The Odyssey’ can ultimately close the gap with ‘Jurassic World’s’ final domestic total remains to be seen, but simply reaching this rarefied company already cements the film’s place in Universal’s box office history. Given how unusual it is for any original release to get anywhere near this kind of longevity, the comparison alone speaks volumes about just how significant this run has become.
