‘The Odyssey’ Star Matt Damon Gets Confused With Brad Pitt in Viral World Cup Final Moment
A funny moment from the 2026 World Cup final quickly became one of the most talked-about moments away from the field after a sports commentator accidentally confused Matt Damon with Brad Pitt during the live broadcast.
According to footage shared by World Cup fans on social media, Fox Sports announcer John Strong was introducing celebrity guests spotted inside MetLife Stadium in New Jersey when he made the mistake. While pointing out famous people attending the match, Strong looked toward the crowd and incorrectly identified Damon as Pitt.
“Brad Pitt among the fans here,” Strong said during the broadcast before his fellow announcer Stu Holden quickly corrected him. “That’s Matt Damon,” Holden replied, leading both commentators to laugh about the mistake.
Strong later admitted that identifying celebrities was not exactly his specialty. After the mix-up, he joked that he would leave the rest of the celebrity announcements to Holden.
“I’m letting you take the rest of these guys,” Strong said. “I got cocky after the first three, and I missed an absolute sitter so I’m done.”
The moment quickly spread online after fans shared clips of the broadcast. Many viewers found the mistake funny, especially because Damon had already been having a major week. One social media user joked that it had been an incredible few days for the actor, writing that Damon had a number one movie at the box office, attended the World Cup final, and was even mistaken for Brad Pitt on television.
Damon, 55, was actually at the final with his wife, Luciana Barroso. The couple watched as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the tournament. They were among many famous guests who attended the highly anticipated match.
The crowd at MetLife Stadium included several major celebrities, including Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Blake Lively, David and Victoria Beckham, Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, Richard Gere, Alix Earle, and NFL stars Patrick and Brittany Mahomes.
The event also featured major entertainment moments, with Justin Bieber and Madonna performing during the Topps Final Halftime Show. Tom Cruise also appeared before the match to deliver a special pre-game message celebrating the tournament.
While Damon was in attendance, the person he was mistaken for, Brad Pitt, was not at the final. Pitt had attended an earlier World Cup match at SoFi Stadium in California, where he watched Spain defeat Belgium during their tournament run.
Pitt was joined at that match by friends Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, as well as his girlfriend Ines de Ramon. Photos from the event showed Pitt and de Ramon enjoying the game together, with the couple sharing a kiss while celebrating Spain’s performance.
The two Hollywood stars have often been compared because of their similar status as major movie icons, but the World Cup moment created a new reason for fans to talk about them.
Could you tell Matt Damon and Brad Pitt apart at first glance?
For Damon, the mistake came during an already memorable weekend. Between his successful film release and his appearance at one of the biggest sporting events in the world, the actor found himself at the center of attention, even when the spotlight came from a commentator getting his name wrong.
