Matt Damon Gave the ‘Odysseus’ Crew One Powerful Message When Filming Got Brutal

Filming a movie as massive as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ was never going to be easy. The cast spent long hours shooting across different locations, dealing with difficult weather, intense action scenes, and physically demanding conditions. According to actor Himesh Patel, one moment during production showed exactly why Matt Damon was the perfect person to lead the film’s cast.

In an interview with Men’s Health, Patel opened up about his experience playing Eurylochus, the second-in-command to Damon’s Odysseus. While the movie required the actors to perform huge action sequences and battle scenes, some of the hardest moments came from simply being on set in extreme conditions.

Patel recalled one particularly difficult day while filming near the island of Favignana in Italy. The cast had already spent the day shooting under sunny skies, but the weather quickly changed when dark clouds moved in. Instead of stopping production, Nolan decided to continue filming because the changing conditions created the exact atmosphere he wanted for the scene.

The actors returned to the boat, where they had to film while dealing with heavy rain, strong winds, and rough conditions. The special effects team used water hoses and wind machines to create the storm, leaving the cast completely soaked as they performed their scenes.

While everyone was struggling through the cold and exhausting shoot, Damon stepped in with a reminder that changed the mood. Patel told Men’s Health that Damon looked at the cast and said, “There are thousands of actors in SAG, and every single one of them would kill to be where you are.”

For Patel, the comment was a perfect example of Damon’s attitude on set. Despite being the lead actor and one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Damon never acted like he was above the challenges everyone else was facing.

“He’s in it as much as we are,” Patel explained, describing Nolan’s production as a place where everyone works together. The actor said Damon’s work ethic made it difficult for anyone else to complain because the Oscar-winning actor was putting in the same effort, if not more.

Patel also revealed that Damon’s dedication continued throughout the entire production. He said Damon was always prepared, always focused, and never complained despite the demanding schedule. For the younger members of the cast, watching Damon handle the pressure became a lesson in professionalism.

The challenges of making ‘The Odyssey’ were part of Nolan’s approach to creating a realistic experience. Patel explained that Nolan prefers practical filmmaking whenever possible, with the director often putting himself in the same difficult situations as the actors.

“Christopher Nolan needs everyone to be at the same level. We’re all going to be in it together. And if we’re in the water, he’s in the water with us,” Patel said.

That mindset helped create the intense and realistic style Nolan is known for. From freezing locations to massive practical sets, the cast experienced many of the same hardships that their characters faced in the story.

For Patel, working alongside Damon and Nolan became more than just another movie job. It showed him the importance of commitment, teamwork, and appreciating opportunities even when they become difficult.

Matt Damon’s simple message during that rainy boat scene was not just a motivational speech. It was a reminder to the entire cast that being part of something extraordinary often requires pushing through the toughest moments.
