‘The Odyssey’ Trojan Horse Takes Over London’s Trafalgar Square Ahead Of Christopher Nolan’s Epic Release
Christopher Nolan has never done anything small, and his latest promotional stunt proves that philosophy extends well beyond the theater. With his sweeping adaptation of Homer’s epic just days from release, the marketing campaign has taken over some of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, turning city squares into full-blown movie sets.
That larger-than-life approach reached a new peak this week in London, where one of the most iconic images from ancient mythology suddenly loomed over one of the city’s most famous public spaces. Tourists and commuters alike found themselves stopping in their tracks at the sight, and it did not take long for the moment to spread across social media.
A towering Trojan Horse appeared overnight in Trafalgar Square, transforming the historic landmark into a preview of Nolan’s mythic action epic ‘The Odyssey.’ Standing 11 metres high and weighing roughly four tonnes, the installation rose from a sand-covered base positioned between the square’s famous bronze lions and fountains, directly beneath Nelson’s Column.
The sculpture was designed to recreate the weathered wooden horse seen throughout the film, crafted using steel, fibreglass, polystyrene, sand, and resin to mimic the look of aged timber. Built using the production’s own blueprints, the ambitious construction took a team of 45 designers, steelworkers, fabricators, and engineers roughly six weeks and more than 300 hours to complete.
Visitors exploring the display were also treated to an exhibition featuring film stills and behind-the-scenes photography, along with a walkway lined with flaming torches that added to the cinematic atmosphere.
The Trafalgar Square appearance marks just one stop in what has become an extensive touring campaign for the horse, following its debut at the film’s world premiere in Leicester Square last week. That original version of the statue, which stood roughly 36 feet tall and weighed more than 8,800 pounds according to details provided by Universal, reportedly overshadowed even the film’s starry red carpet lineup, which included Nolan alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
A separate touring version of the horse has been making its own rounds across the United States, previously appearing in Venice Beach, Arlington and Miami before recently landing outside the AMC Lincoln Square theater in New York City ahead of the film’s American premiere. Universal has also placed the original horse used during filming on permanent display outside the AMC Universal Cinema at Universal Studios’ CityWalk, giving fans multiple opportunities to see the massive prop in person before and after the film’s release.
The horse itself plays a central role in the film’s marketing, and for good reason, given its significance to the story. Nolan gave exhibitors an extended preview of the sequence during a CinemaCon presentation earlier this year, describing the shoot as an absolute nightmare to film in all the right ways, according to Variety. He detailed the difficulty of shooting the sequence across boats, mountains, and caves in punishing weather conditions, calling that difficulty fitting, given the nature of the story itself.
That commitment to practical, large-scale filmmaking lines up with Nolan’s broader ambitions for the project, which was shot entirely using IMAX cameras for the first time in his career. Given how much of the marketing has leaned into that same sense of tactile, real-world spectacle, the touring Trojan Horse feels like a natural extension of the film’s overall identity rather than just a simple publicity stunt.
What Do You Think Of ‘The Odyssey’s’ Giant Trojan Horse Marketing Stunt?
With ‘The Odyssey’ opening in UK cinemas this Friday and across the United States on the same date, the wave of eye-catching promotional stops shows no signs of slowing down before release. Between the giant horse’s world tour and the overwhelmingly positive early reactions from critics, anticipation for the film continues building right up until its theatrical debut.
